Centralt i Francks livsværk står servicet<br />

Teema, der blev udviklet på Arabia i årene<br />

1948-52 under navnet ”Kilta”, og relanceret<br />

i 1981 hos Iittala under navnet Teema. Med<br />

udgangspunkt i de helt enkle geometriske<br />

grundformer: en cirkel, en firkant og et<br />

rektangel blev der skabt et både tidstypisk<br />

og tidløst service. Det var ikke et sæt i traditionel<br />

forstand, og de 19 dele lod sig<br />

kombinere i en uendelighed. Det var nemt<br />

at rengøre, stabelbart og perfekt til det<br />

moderne hjems uprætentiøse spisekøkken,<br />

hvor maden kom direkte fra køkkenet til<br />

bordet og de klare, rene farver bidrog til et<br />

både muntert og livligt udtryk. I Kilta står<br />

den rene og funktionelle løsning frem som<br />

et skønhedsideal i sig selv.<br />

KAJ FRANCK ”KILTA”, 1948-52<br />

A key element in Franck’s life’s work is<br />

Teema, which was developed at Arabia in<br />

1948-52 under the name “Kilta” and relaunched<br />

by Iittala in 1981 under the name<br />

Teema. Based on the simple geometric<br />

shapes of a circle, a square and a rectangle,<br />

he created a service that was simultaneously<br />

timeless and typical of its time. It was<br />

not a tableware set in the traditional sense,<br />

and the 19 components could be put together<br />

in endless combinations. It was easy<br />

to clean, stackable and perfect for the unpretentious<br />

kitchen-dining room of the<br />

modern home, where the food went directly<br />

from the kitchen to the table, and the bright<br />

colours contributed to a cheerful and vibrant<br />

expression. In Kilta, the clean and functional<br />

solution is held up as the essence of<br />

beauty.<br />

Lunning Prisen gav Kaj Franck økonomisk<br />

mulighed for at besøge Japan for første<br />

gang i 1956, og han skulle komme tilbage<br />

flere gange. Han var dybt inspireret af den<br />

japanske kultur med de på én gang forfinede<br />

og forenklede brugsgenstande, der var<br />

baseret på en gammel og ubrudt tradition,<br />

og det ses i flere af hans værker. Men inspirationen<br />

gik begge veje, og Franck skulle<br />

blive en af de mest berømmede nordiske<br />

formgivere i Japan.<br />

The Lunning Prize gave Kaj Franck the<br />

economic means to travel to Japan in 1956<br />

on what would be the first of several visits.<br />

He was profoundly inspired by Japanese<br />

culture with its simultaneously refined and<br />

simplified utilitarian objects that were<br />

guided by a long-standing, uninterrupted<br />

tradition, and this is evident in several of his<br />

works. The inspiration in fact worked both<br />

ways, and Franck would become one of the<br />

most renowned Nordic designers in Japan.
