The Practice of Science: Beyond Social Constructivism
v. Stig Andur Pedersen
Scientific knowledge is the result of a complex process where machines, instruments,
facts, theories, disciplined human practices, and social relations are intertwined. In the
book The Mangle of Practice Andrew Pickering gives an original analysis of this
complex practice. Based on this analysis the course will give an epistemological
characterisation of the practice of modern scientific work and its role in society. This
will lead to a discussion of how far scientific knowledge can be characterized as
giving an objective and true descriptions of the world or whether it rather should be
considered as social constructions without proper truth claims. The emphasis will
mainly be on medicine, technology and natural sciences. But it is possible to follow
the course without special knowledge of natural science.
