In the article care is observed as a value in health educational practise. The idea of
having coherent professional competencies based on stable values is difficult to
establish. Consequently the professionals must build competencies to practise value
clarification.
Reflecting on the diversity of values in order to build a professional capacity for
coping with care and other values is not just a matter of professional health
functions but is also relevant in building new educational competencies. A reinterpretation
of the concept of competence is a self-aware ability to observe and reflect
on differences or to build the capacity for this reflection. In this conception
educational competence is a question of reflection on internal ‘me’ and external
‘you’ and ‘we’. In this conception, „building competencies for value clarification in
health education“ means qualifying the ability to observe the distinctions between
individual ways of care giving and valuing vs. social ways of valuing in health
education. A research project, involving the school health nurses in the Municipality
of Copenhagen, is presented. The project aims at developing new health educational
competencies describing and embracing health promotion and prevention in health
nurses’ practice. The focus of the project is on values and values clarification in relation
to schools health nurses’ practice and their competencies. One conclusion is
that health promotion and prevention activities are often build on care as part of
the basic of values but it makes no sense to view the educational aims only on the
basic of care.
