Riegels, Niels Ditlev, 1755—1802, Historiker <strong>og</strong> Litterat Af E. Holm, Jul. Petersen <strong>og</strong> Jonas Collin Niels Ditlev Riegels var født paa Søllestedgaard paa Laaland [Lolland], <strong>og</strong> han var Søn af Justitsraad, Landsdommer Hans R. (dvs. Riegelsen) (død 1770) <strong>og</strong> Bodil Birgitte f. Flindt (død 1767). Efter at han var bleven Student 1771, begyndte han at studere Theol<strong>og</strong>i, især Kirkehistorie, <strong>og</strong> han udgav n<strong>og</strong>le mindre Arbejder i denne Retning; men han blev kjed deraf, rejste udenlands <strong>og</strong> opholdt sig ved flere Universiteter, saaledes baade ved det i Gøttingen <strong>og</strong> det i Kiel, hvor han kom i en nærmere Forbindelse med en fra ham for øvrigt meget forskjellig Personlighed, Prokansleren J. A. Cramer. Han vendte tilbage til Kjøbenhavn 1779, <strong>og</strong> 2 Aar derefter blev han ansat som Pagehovmester hos Dronning Juliane Marie. Trods den Uvilje, som han siger at han havde fattet for det theol<strong>og</strong>iske Studium, følte han d<strong>og</strong> Lyst til at udgive et stort kirkehistorisk Arbejde, <strong>og</strong> i Tiden fra 1781—86 fik han udgivet 3 Bind, der d<strong>og</strong> ikke naaede længere end fra den kristne Kirkes Begyndelse til den arianske Strids Afslutning. Under dette Arbejde havde han søgt at nærme sig til Guldberg, som synes at have fattet Interesse for hans Plan; men han valgte d<strong>og</strong> snart at slutte sig til dem, der paa denne Tid arbejdede paa at styrte det Guldbergske Ministerium for at stille den unge Kronprins i Spidsen for Staten; han virkede bl.a. til igjennem Cramer [Johan Andreas Cramer] i Kiel at faa en Brevvexling i Stand imellem Kronprinsen <strong>og</strong> Bernstorff. Men naar han aabenbart havde haabet ved at deltage heri at bane sig Vejen til stor Indflydelse for sig selv, blev han skuffet, thi de andre Deltagere i Planen havde Mistillid til ham <strong>og</strong> følte sig frastødte ved hans lidet tiltalende Personlighed. Intet Avancement faldt derfor i hans Lod, da Kronprinsen kom til Magten 14. April 1784; men han opnaaede d<strong>og</strong>, hvad der maatte synes at være en ikke ringe Fordel, at faa en aarlig Pension paa 1.200 Rdl. Skjønt dette ingenlunde kunde kaldes en daarlig Betaling for, hvad han havde udrettet til Gavn for Kronprinsen, <strong>og</strong> uagtet det i hin Tid fra flere Sider blev kritiseret som en urimelig Begunstigelse af ham, mente han d<strong>og</strong> selv, at han var bleven skammelig tilsidesat, <strong>og</strong> han glemte det aldrig. I den følgende Tid levede han mest paa en Gaard, som han ejede i Landsbyen Højet paa Falster, optagen af en omfattende Skribentvirksomhed. I Slutningen af sit Liv styrede han et af ham selv grundet »Læreinstitut« i Sorø, ved hvilket han bl.a. holdt offentlige Foredrag over historiske <strong>og</strong> naturhistoriske Æmner. Under et Besøg i Gunslev Præstegaard paa Falster — vistnok for at se til Arbejder ved Skovby Nor, som han havde væsentlig Andel i — døde han af et apoplektisk Anfald 24. Avg. 1802. Hans Forfattergjerning var af meget forskjellig Slags. Han skrev saaledes baade et saakaldet »Forsøg til Kirurgiens Historie« (s. ndfr.) <strong>og</strong>, hvad der maa nævnes som hans vigtigste Arbejder, udførlige Skildringer af den danske Historie, nemlig Christian Vs Historie (1792), Frederik IV's Historie i 2 Bind (1795) samt »Smaa historiske Skrifter« i 3 Bind (1796—98). Af dette sidste Skrift drejer næsten hele 3. Del sig om Christian VI; i 1. Del findes et »Skilderi« af Christian II, et lille «Maleri» af Christian IV <strong>og</strong> et Par »Skilderier« af Dronningerne Sophie Amalie <strong>og</strong> Charlotte Amalie. Det øvrige af disse 3 Bind behandler den almindelige Historie. Hertil kom mindre Skrifter vedrørende Dyrlægevidenskab <strong>og</strong> flere Grene af Naturhistorien (s. ndfr.) samt en stor Mængde Afhandlinger <strong>og</strong> Flyveskrifter med Hensyn til forskjellige Forhold i Kirke, Stat <strong>og</strong> Samfund, sædvanlig af udpræget polemisk Farve. Heriblandt kan fremhæves det Maanedskrift, han i Aarene 1788—90 udgav under Navn af »Kjøbenhavns Skilderi«. R. var aabenbart en Mand med Begavelse; han havde et skarpt Blik til at iagttage alskens Forhold i Samfundet, han havde Sans for Fremskridt, <strong>og</strong> man kan ikke frakjende ham Følelse for de lidende i Samfundet. Som man her mærker Paavirkning af det filanthropiske i Tiden, saaledes var han paa mange Maader stærkt greben af, hvad der den Gang var oppe. Da der utvivlsomt var meget, der trængte til kritisk at belyses, for at de nødvendige Forandringer kunde finde Sted, vilde en Mand med hans Evner kunne have gjort god Nytte; men ulykkeligvis havde han som Personlighed alvorlige Skyggesider. Han var en underlig misfornøjet, bidsk Natur, der havde en utrolig Forkjærlighed for kun at se, hvad der ikke duede, <strong>og</strong> for at se det slette i meget forstørret Maalestok. Naar man undtager n<strong>og</strong>le ganske faa Mennesker, saa han sig arrig paa næsten alle, som han paa en eller anden Maade kom i Berøring med. Det er en Selvfølge, at en Mand med hans Aandsretning <strong>og</strong> hans Temperament blev stærkt greben af den franske Revolution. Han stolede paa, at der vilde komme herlige Virkninger af »den franske Nations for den selv farlige, men for Menneskeheden heldige Gjæring«; han saa i Aanden, hvorledes »dens Lærdomme i Fremtiden ville ophøje sig langt over gothisk Adelsaand, hierarkiske Voldsmænd <strong>og</strong> da holde disse lænkede til deres Triumfv<strong>og</strong>n, naar de uforstyrrede drage om fra Hytte til Byen <strong>og</strong> udbrede varig Lyksalighed«. Mange her hjemme forstode den Gang at forene Begejstring for den franske Revolution med Ærefrygt for den dansk-norske Enevælde, særlig som den traadte frem i Tiden efter 1784. Men dette var R. langt fra. Han var vistnok i <strong>og</strong> for sig ikke en afgjort Fjende af Monarkiet; derimod var Aristokrati det, han hadede mest af alt, <strong>og</strong> han kunde derfor godt finde sig i et Kongedømme, der gjennemførte stræng Lighed — helst med n<strong>og</strong>en Uvilje imod Adelen —, <strong>og</strong> som tillige havde Lyst til Reformer, med andre Ord den oplyste Enevælde. Men helst saa han d<strong>og</strong> denne Enevælde paa visse Maader n<strong>og</strong>et indskrænket, ikke alene ved Pressefrihed, men <strong>og</strong>saa ved at have den Pligt at aflægge offentligt Regnskab, <strong>og</strong> dette førte ham da konsekvent til at ønske en Rigsstænderforsamling, for hvilken Regeringen skulde aflægge sit Regnskab. Bortset herfra vare for øvrigt R.s politiske Meninger ligesom næsten alle deres her hjemme, hvem Revolutionen satte i Bevægelse, meget uklare. 331/484
