In accordance with § 4 of the Law of the 20th May 1882, concerning<br />
measures to be adopted in respect to malignant contagoius diseases amongst<br />
animals, and the authority given to the Director of the Civil Veterinary Department<br />
by virtue of a Royal Decree of the 31st July 1875, in respect thereto, the<br />
following instructions have been decided upon.<br />
Regulations<br />
to be followed in respect to malignant Foot-rot in Sheep.<br />
Provided one or more animals amongst live stock are attacked by malignant<br />
Foot-rot, which disease is subject to the supervision of the Public Authorities,<br />
a qualified Veterinary Surgeon must be at once called in, or a report thereof<br />
be made to the Police, see Circular fr<strong>om</strong> the Department of Justice of 26th February<br />
1887, besides which the regulations are to be carried out in the following<br />
manner.<br />
1. The sick animals must be isolated fr<strong>om</strong> the sound ones. If a large portion<br />
of the stock is attacked the sound animals shall be removed to a separate<br />
place, with a solid dry surface and plenty of dry litter, after their feet have<br />
been carefully washed and disinfected with a solution of carbolic acid<br />
(5 per cent), or, provided the Veterinary Surgeon himself can per<strong>for</strong>m the<br />
work, then with a solution of corrosive sublimate (2 per thousand), and<br />
after all adhering portions of dung-covered wool have been cut off the<br />
fleeces. If a small portion of the a,nimals are attacked, they shall be<br />
removed to an isolated place. The sheep cot shall be disinfected by removing<br />
the uppermost layer of dung to a depth of 15 centimètres (about<br />
6 1/4 inches). The walls, and all the woodwork, shall be washed with a<br />
solution of Chloride of lime ( 1/2 Kilogramme [1 lb.] to 1 bucket of water).<br />
The floor shall be sprinkled with solution of carbolic acid ( 1/2 litre of<br />
crude carbolic acid to 16 litres of water) and re-covered with a layer of<br />
clean dry litter. After this has been effected the sound animals shall be
