determine whether it is attacked by the disease or not.<br />

The horse shall, during that period, be tended by people who do not go<br />

near sound horses, and who have their own separate stable implements.<br />

Subject to the observation of these precautionary measures be owner shall<br />

be permitted to work the horse within the confines of Hie properly.<br />

§<br />

Stables, or places in which horses attacked by Glanders or Farcy,<br />

horses suspected of being so attacked, have been kept, shall be cleansed first, by<br />

washing them out well with water, after which all woodwork and iron shall be<br />

washed with boiling hot water (of a temperature not less than 100° Celsius)<br />

and, when dry, be coated with a solution consisting of 1 portion or Carbolic<br />

acid to 100 parts of water, or of 1 portion of Chloride of lime to 42 parts of<br />

water. The masonry of the stable shall, after cleansing, be whilewashed<br />

lime. The stables shall thereafter be aired <strong>for</strong> several days shall not be<br />

occupied be<strong>for</strong>e they are c<strong>om</strong>pletely dry.<br />

Other objects, such as harness and other driving articles and stable implements,<br />

which have been in contact with such sick horses, must be cleansed,<br />

according to the nature of the article, by washing with boiling hot watifi- or<br />

suds, and coated with the be<strong>for</strong>e mentioned sobilions of Carbolic acid, or Chloride<br />

of lime, or heated (<strong>for</strong> instance in a moderately heated baking oven) to a<br />

temperature of at least 75 0 Celsius.<br />

Horses apparently sound, but which, in accordance with 1, have been<br />

placed under the observation of the Public Authorities must not he employed in<br />

such a manner as to meet other horses; <strong>for</strong> instance, at public resting places<br />

they must not be placed in strange stables, or let out on c<strong>om</strong>mon, or non<br />

enclosed pastures Such horses may not be sold unless the purchaser has been<br />

in<strong>for</strong>med that they are under the observation of the Authorities and that the<br />

Veterinary Surgeon, and the Chief C<strong>om</strong>missioner of Police (in the ( ountry, the<br />

District Head Constable) have been in<strong>for</strong>med of the sale. The Police (or District<br />

Head Constable) of the place where the horse has been sold shall be in<strong>for</strong>med<br />

thereof by these officials.<br />

§ 8.<br />

When the observation exercised by the Public Authorities, over a horse<br />

reported as being suspected of Wanders or Fa,rey, shall be withdrawn, the<br />

Veterinary Surgeon shall issue a certificate to the owner of the horse, which<br />

certificate shall contain the name and 'abode (native place) of the owner; an
