A Dance
Theatre Success
The Greenlandic dance theatre »Polaroid« has arisen from the
ashes and will be setting out on tour within Greenland and
to Northern Europe, while the USA will have to wait until the
spring of 2009, to see this popular show

Sisimiut, Nuuk, Estonia, Lithuania,
Northern Ireland, Denmark and
Alberquerque, New Mexico; but that’s
just the start of the adventure, for the
tour plan continues to grow!
There have been many »feelers« out
for »Polaroid – What’s really going
on around the North Pole?« since
its creation in 2006. This summer,
liken a Phoenix, Polaroid arose in
its original form with the original
cast of performers: The Greenlandic
actors Nukaaka Coster-Waldau,
Varste Mathæussen Berndtsson, Vivi
Sørensen, Kristian Mølgaard and the
Faroese dancer Kristina Sørensen
Odgaard.
Behind the Polaroid success is the
Nordic Institute of Greenland/NAPA,
who has taken it upon itself to fan
Air Greenland inflight magazine 43
the flames of the Greenlandic theatre
scene which has been without a
theatre school for over 14 years. With
a population of a little more than
56,000 finding the funding to educate
performing artists is a challenge in
its self. But even this cannot stop the
gold mine of creative talents, just
waiting to show themselves to the
world.
The performance is the work of the
Norwegian choreographer Jo Strømgren,
who is known for his multifaceted
artistic talent. In his pieces the
boundaries between dance and theatre
are erased and blend together. The
title »Polaroid – What’s really going
on around the North Pole?« is a mirror
into the Inuit spirit of the piece, a
dance theatre that gathers together,
dissects and turns topsy-turvey this
very spirit. The show is a virtual assault
of the senses, with dance, theatre,
lights, sound and costumes that are
presented within the Inuit’s own terms
of reference. There are several good
reasons why the production is being
launched again. After the première in
2006, Polaroid hit the road and was
on tour in Norway, Denmark, Sweden,
Finland, Greenland, the Åland Islands
and the Faroe Islands. The success of
the tour gave resonance and this year
Norway broke tradition and made
the Greenlandic production a part
of the official concert tour for 2008.
»Polaroid – What really going on
around the North Pole?« will play 28
shows in Norway alone and it will be
the first time that a foreign production
is an official part of the national
concert tour.
