Top-tuned Hotel Arctic
33 new rooms and a new conference centre make Air Greenland’s
hotel in Ilulissat one of the most modern in Greenland

Hotel Arctic has opened the doors
to a whole new wing with 33 rooms
spread over three floors. All the new
rooms are of high, international standard
and all have unique views of the
Ice Bank, Disko Bay and Ilulissat town
– the most popular tourist attractions
in Greenland.
The hotel’s new wing is situated as
an extension of the Kayak Wing which
Hotel Arctic opened in the year 2000.
The new wing is therefore appropriately
named »Umiaq«, which is the
Greenlandic word for women’s boat.
But this is not the end of the
innovations at Hotel Arctic, which
is owned by Air Greenland. A new
meeting and conference centre will
be available for use in a few months
– in January 2009 – and it has already
been acknowledged with five stars.

who can look forward to fascinating
surroundings and fine facilities. The
new part of the conference centre is
being built in the driveway to Hotel
Arctic. From here, there is a magnificent
view across the Ice Bank and
the town of Ilulissat with its almost
5000 inhabitants and almost just as
many dogs. The town was the birthplace
of famous polar explorer Knud
Rasmussen, whose childhood home
today is a museum.
With the opening of the new
Umiaq Wing, Hotel Arctic has 87
rooms and five igloo huts with a total
capacity of 184 beds.
All the present, north-facing hotel
rooms in the older wing will be closed
in connection with the building of the
new conference centre. Subsequently
there will be views of the Ice Bank,
Disko Bay and Ilulissat town from all
the hotel’s rooms as well as from the
gourmet restaurant Ulo, the Takanna
brasserie and the conference facilities.
In the summer of 2009 the hotel will
open the doors to the lower floor of
the Umiaq Wing where a new and
entirely wonderful world awaits in the
form of a wellness and fitness centre.
With this, Hotel Arctic is very well
equipped to receive the increasing
stream of tourists and celebrities who
choose to visit this jewel in West
Greenland. The hotel has been visited
by several celebrities over recent
years, e.g. American presidential candidate
and senator John McCain, the
chairman of the EU Commission Jose
Manuel Barroso, German Chancellor
Angela Merkel, the Russian foreign
minister Sergej Lavrov, the Icelandic
singer Björk, Prime Minister Anders
Fogh Rasmussen and members of
both the Danish, Japanese and Thai
royal courts.
