Top-tuned Hotel Arctic<br />

33 new rooms and a new conference centre make <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Greenland</strong>’s<br />

hotel in Iluliss<strong>at</strong> one of the most modern in <strong>Greenland</strong><br />

Hotel Arctic has opened the doors<br />

to a whole new wing with 33 rooms<br />

spread over three floors. All the new<br />

rooms are of high, intern<strong>at</strong>ional standard<br />

and all have unique views of the<br />

Ice Bank, Disko Bay and Iluliss<strong>at</strong> town<br />

– the most popular tourist <strong>at</strong>tractions<br />

in <strong>Greenland</strong>.<br />

The hotel’s new wing is situ<strong>at</strong>ed as<br />

an extension of the Kayak Wing which<br />

Hotel Arctic opened in the year 2000.<br />

The new wing is t<strong>her</strong>e<strong>for</strong>e appropri<strong>at</strong>ely<br />

named »Umiaq«, which is the<br />

<strong>Greenland</strong>ic word <strong>for</strong> women’s bo<strong>at</strong>.<br />

But this is not the end of the<br />

innov<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>at</strong> Hotel Arctic, which<br />

is owned by <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Greenland</strong>. A new<br />

meeting and conference centre will<br />

be available <strong>for</strong> u<strong>se</strong> in a few months<br />

– in January 2009 – and it has already<br />

been acknowledged with five stars.<br />

The conference centre, which is<br />

already receiving bookings, will be<br />

able to accommod<strong>at</strong>e 120 participants<br />

who can look <strong>for</strong>ward to fascin<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

surroundings and fine facilities. The<br />

new part of the conference centre is<br />

being built in the driveway to Hotel<br />

Arctic. From <strong>her</strong>e, t<strong>her</strong>e is a magnificent<br />

view across the Ice Bank and<br />

the town of Iluliss<strong>at</strong> with its almost<br />

5000 inhabitants and almost just as<br />

many dogs. The town was the birthplace<br />

of famous polar explorer Knud<br />

Rasmus<strong>se</strong>n, who<strong>se</strong> childhood home<br />

today is a mu<strong>se</strong>um.<br />

With the opening of the new<br />

Umiaq Wing, Hotel Arctic has 87<br />

rooms and five igloo huts with a total<br />

capacity of 184 beds.<br />

All the pre<strong>se</strong>nt, north-facing hotel<br />

rooms in the older wing will be clo<strong>se</strong>d<br />

in connection with the building of the<br />

new conference centre. Sub<strong>se</strong>quently<br />

t<strong>her</strong>e will be views of the Ice Bank,<br />

Disko Bay and Iluliss<strong>at</strong> town from all<br />

the hotel’s rooms as well as from the<br />

gourmet restaurant Ulo, the Takanna<br />

bras<strong>se</strong>rie and the conference facilities.<br />

In the summer of 2009 the hotel will<br />

open the doors to the lower floor of<br />

the Umiaq Wing w<strong>her</strong>e a new and<br />

entirely wonderful world awaits in the<br />

<strong>for</strong>m of a wellness and fitness centre.<br />

With this, Hotel Arctic is very well<br />

equipped to receive the increasing<br />

stream of tourists and celebrities who<br />

choo<strong>se</strong> to visit this jewel in West<br />

<strong>Greenland</strong>. The hotel has been visited<br />

by <strong>se</strong>veral celebrities over recent<br />

years, e.g. American presidential candid<strong>at</strong>e<br />

and <strong>se</strong>n<strong>at</strong>or John McCain, the<br />

chairman of the EU Commission Jo<strong>se</strong><br />

Manuel Barroso, German Chancellor<br />

Angela Merkel, the Russian <strong>for</strong>eign<br />

minister Sergej Lavrov, the Icelandic<br />

singer Björk, Prime Minister Anders<br />

Fogh Rasmus<strong>se</strong>n and members of<br />

both the Danish, Japane<strong>se</strong> and Thai<br />

royal courts.
