A population of more than 5000 inhabitants makes Ilulissat
the biggest town and municipality in the northern region of
Greenland. Ilulissat is located in North Greenland near the
most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere and the
famous Ilulissat Ice Fiord which has now been inscribed in
UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Ilulissat is a productive, dynamic and busy town dominated
by fishing and tourism which make Ilulissat a naturally leading
centre for North Greenland.
Within fishing the Greenlandic Ice Fiord halibut is dominant
being leniently fished from skiffs and by means of dog sledges
in the UNESCO approved Ice Fiord complex placing Ilulissat
as a world leading town in this respect. In addition to the
Greenlandic Ice Fiord halibut species like shrimps, snow crabs
and cod are fished and processed as primary species to be
exported. Utilization of a wide range of other exotic fish species
is being explored and has an export potential.
As a natural part of tourism development the Ice Fiord complex,
the glacier and the tall icebergs are highlighted. These
can be enjoyed on foot, from helicopter and by boat, not
least during the time of the midnight sun in the summer
period. In addition an exciting and challenging settlement
tourism is offered.
Ilulissat Commercial Council is a major force in respect of
development within fishing, oil and mineral industries, and
local commerce in general, and is a helper and solid partner
for both established and new companies, from entrepreneurs
to bigger projects.
The future strategy of Ilulissat, both in respect of fishing and
tourism, is directed towards regional cooperation within
North Greenland, a development with a high priority. This
also forms the basis for viable development possibilities focusing
on high value processing and promotion in accordance
with our belief that many small opportunities are in total
Greenland’s greatest opportunity.
