is the originator behind a
photo bureau that, with a
rare understanding for quality,
does justice to Greenland’s
nature

- I really believe that there was a discrepancy
between the unbelievable
beauty of the nature of Greenland and
the quality of the photos I saw in various
periodicals, magazines and books.
Biologist Carsten Egevang explains
why he, in 2004, started the on-line
photo bureau ARC-PIC.COM. Today,
it consists of a group of seven photographers
who, for the most part,
live in Greenland in places ranging
from Qaqortoq to Qaanaaq.
- There are motifs in Greenland that
are not found anywhere else on earth.
There are natural subjects such as ice
and mountains, but the traditional
way of life with its deeply integrated
hunting culture also provides interesti
ng features. Photography is all about
exploiting the natural light and the
light in Greenland is fantastic, says
Carsten Egevang. He acquired his interest
in photography during field work
studying Greenland’s sea birds.
- These long periods spent outside
in nature are the key to a good photo.
Out here, there is time to wait for the
right light, to read the animals’ behavior
patterns and to try to predict their
next move and how they will react
when you attempt to sneak up close
with a telephoto lens.
At first, ARC-PIC.COM only provided
pictures of nature and animals. Today,
the selection has been expanded to
include towns, settlements and areas
of land.
