Greenland Spring Water has been
working on a project to establish a
bottling facility and undertake promotion.
The original budget was around
DKK 300 million. Today, the spring
water project has slimmed down economically.
But everything still indicates
the start of production next year.
In the beginning, we will be able
to produce 9,600 bottles of spring
water an hour and we can sell them
in China, Japan and Germany. We
have to start on a small scale because
the power station can’t handle higher
output. In the long term, we plan to
increase production when the power
station’s capacity has increased,
says Ove Berthelsen, consultant for
Greenland Spring Water.
A bright future

The development of commercial exploitation
of water in Greenland is being
closely monitored by the authorities.
In 2001, Greenland’s Home Rule
Government passed the world’s first
ice and water legislation and in 2004
it prepared a strategy for export of

steady success by supplying age-old
ice for the production of Siku Vodka.
The quantity isn’t huge, but that can
change.
- Siku Vodka has won a series of blind
tests in reputed food magazines. In
addition, vodka is generally increasing
its market share worldwide so
the future is looking bright. Not least
because of the new and positive signals
from the American market, where
Siku Vodka is expected to be introduced.
Furthermore, there might one
day be a Siku Gin, says Michael Lings,
chairman of the board for Greenland
Ice Cap Production A/S, who has the
Canadian producer of Siku Vodka as
co-owner. Michael Ling’s wish list for
the future includes melt water production.
- In my opinion, melt water is of a
completely different quality to spring
these products up to the year 2013.
The long-term strategy was formulated
in recognition of that fact that it is not
possible to create a completely new
industry in just a short time. It takes
long-term investments and comprehensive
feasibility studies.

water. Melted inland ice is unbelievably
pure and soft in taste. It has
exclusivity and there will definitely be
a market for this, says Michael Lings.
The mood is not quite so optimistic
at the micro-brewery Greenland
Brewhouse. After a terrific start with
the innovative beer brewed with
Greenland’s inland ice, the company
has accumulated a deficit of DKK
2 million in only a few years. This
is mainly due to problems involving
management of sales agreements.
At time of writing, the Home Rule’s
venture capital broker, Greenland
Venture, has hired a new director in
an attempt to turn the ship around
for the production of Greenlandic
beer products that have won international
acclaim. For this reason alone
they deserve to have a future.
In time to come, the Home Rule
Government will intensify promotion
of the ice and water potential by, for
example, preparing a product catalogue.
