W<strong>at</strong>er from <strong>Greenland</strong><br />

to consumers worldwide<br />

In a year, if all goes well, consumers will be able to unscrew the lid of<br />

a bottle of prestigious, <strong>Greenland</strong>ic w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

By Christian Schultz-Lorentzen<br />

Up to 60,000 year-old melt w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

from <strong>Greenland</strong>’s inland ice! Crystal<br />

clear spring w<strong>at</strong>er from underground<br />

springs! Surface w<strong>at</strong>er from pure,<br />

remote lakes!<br />

<strong>Greenland</strong>’s w<strong>at</strong>er resources are not<br />

only enormous and easily accessible;<br />

the taste and the purity of the w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

are also unique. The<strong>se</strong> are four important<br />

arguments <strong>for</strong> starting a commercial<br />

production of exclusive, bottled<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er in <strong>Greenland</strong>. Prepar<strong>at</strong>ions are<br />

already under way.<br />

If all goes well, the first bottle filled<br />

with <strong>Greenland</strong>ic w<strong>at</strong>er will leave<br />

the bottling plant within a year.<br />

ice and to <strong>se</strong>ll w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>for</strong> production<br />

purpo<strong>se</strong>s. <strong>Greenland</strong> Spring W<strong>at</strong>er<br />

ApS is also planning to start a longawaited<br />

spring w<strong>at</strong>er production in<br />

Qeqertarsuaq.<br />

Two ot<strong>her</strong> companies are already<br />

producing <strong>Greenland</strong>ic w<strong>at</strong>er. But<br />

in the<strong>se</strong> ca<strong>se</strong>s, the w<strong>at</strong>er is part of<br />

anot<strong>her</strong> product. For <strong>se</strong>veral years,<br />

<strong>Greenland</strong> Ice Cap Production A/S has<br />

produced ice cubes which are u<strong>se</strong>d,<br />

<strong>for</strong> example, by the royal family in<br />

Denmark and <strong>at</strong> pre<strong>se</strong>nt the company<br />

is experiencing gre<strong>at</strong> success supplying<br />

melt w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>for</strong> the Canadianproduced<br />

Siku Vodka, w<strong>her</strong>e the ice<br />

is melted toget<strong>her</strong> with the alcohol <strong>at</strong><br />

a distillery in Holland. And in Narsaq,<br />

<strong>Greenland</strong>’s first micro-brewery,<br />

If all goes<br />

well, the first bottle<br />

filled with <strong>Greenland</strong>ic<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er will leave the<br />

bottling plant within<br />

a year.<br />

of beers.<br />

An experience<br />

Distances to the world markets are<br />

enormous, so considerable transport<br />

costs are involved with production<br />

and export of <strong>Greenland</strong>ic ice and<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er. Companies are t<strong>her</strong>e<strong>for</strong>e focusing<br />

<strong>at</strong> first on the exclusive markets.<br />

And t<strong>her</strong>e are plenty of good reasons.<br />

Or, as owner of <strong>Greenland</strong> Ice W<strong>at</strong>er,<br />

says:<br />

- This is the purest w<strong>at</strong>er in the world.<br />

It is softer and sweeter than any<br />

ot<strong>her</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er. But we mustn’t <strong>se</strong>ll it <strong>for</strong><br />

everyday u<strong>se</strong>. We should <strong>se</strong>ll w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

th<strong>at</strong> is to be enjoyed occasionally. We<br />

must <strong>se</strong>ll an experience, offers Morten<br />

Kel<strong>se</strong>n, who has a concession <strong>for</strong> an<br />

area <strong>at</strong> the mouth of the Ice Fjord in<br />

Iluliss<strong>at</strong>. Here, many thousand yearold<br />

ice-floes are fished up by fis<strong>her</strong>men<br />

and transported ashore. From<br />

Narsaq a freezer load equal to 24,000<br />

litres of melt w<strong>at</strong>er is <strong>se</strong>nt across<br />

the North Atlantic to be filled into<br />

bottles by Danish Bottling Company<br />

in Brande in Jutland. At a l<strong>at</strong>er d<strong>at</strong>e<br />

it is the intention to melt the w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

in Iluliss<strong>at</strong>, thus cre<strong>at</strong>ing jobs in the<br />

town.<br />

Spring w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

In Qeqertarsuaq, <strong>Greenland</strong> Spring<br />

W<strong>at</strong>er ApS has turned its <strong>at</strong>tention<br />

to the pure, virginal springs on Disko<br />

Island, from which the company has a<br />

licence to tap direct. For <strong>se</strong>veral years,
