President’s Message from Dorothe Fair
Hello Flower Friends....
Let's just say that all of us are "in full Bloom"...we
are conditioned and seasoned with constant changing
seasons and temperatures but let's yell from our
decks, balconies or front doors to our condos or apartments...it's
SUMMER...yahoo...it's SUMMER!!
So it's time!!! Go ahead, dispose of that limp poinsettia, cut
back those creeping vines, dump those dried arrangements, slash
all paper, silk and plastic flowers (they only collect dust anyway)
and search out the freshest, most seasonal flowers available.
Make up balcony baskets or boxes or put out urns. Get really
wise and healthy and plant veggies in your containers
for salads to munch on all summer.
Hopefully the ‘SPIRIT’ moves you and you'll be
elbow deep in planting soil soon. Take pictures and
write a short article on your gardening experiences
and submit it to the Sentinel for the September issue.
Remember, the due date for September is August
7. Send your pictures and articles to Linda
Green and Carol Croft at the Sentinel and Ross Knechtel, the
GWSA Web Master, to have your article placed on our website.
Happy gardening.
So what is my MAIN MESSAGE for this June
issue? AGM AGM AGM June 26th.
Doors open at 1:00 pm.
We will be honouring GWSA Volunteers who
have dedicated countless hours to a variety of
Activity Groups during their many years as
Members and Leaders at the GWSA.
Our Mayor, Cam Guthrie, will open our AGM and City Councillors,
June Hofland, Phil Alt, James Gordon and Andy Van
Hellemond, will share some humorous experiences as GWSA
Members.
Our Choir, the Silvertones, will entertain us with songs they
sing at the Retirement Homes they visit throughout the year.
PLUS, a great new feature this year at the AGM: the Activity
Group (there are 44 of them) that has the greatest number of
group participants attending the AGM on June 26th will get a
PIZZA PARTY courtesy of the Board of Directors.
Plan to attend and enjoy refreshments, music, and business
items. Chat with your Board of Directors and meet the
new Directors who will take over for those who have retired
from the Board.
GWSA Email
Updates
Each month, approximately
mid-month, the Membership
and Marketing Committee
at the GWSA will send a
GWSA Email Update. It will
highlight a few of the exciting things happening at the
GWSA: important communications from the Board
(such as construction updates), and upcoming programs
by CSS. We are planning to include topics of
interest to Seniors, including several pertaining to
health and wellness.
You can unsubscribe from the updates at any time
by clicking on the “unsubscribe” link which will be
displayed at the bottom of every update.
If you have previously completed a paper “Consent
to Receive Electronic Communications,” we are asking
you to complete the electronic sign-up process described
below. We can’t sign you up manually AND
have our list editor keep track of the CASL (Canadian
Anti-Spam Legislation) compliance for those paper
forms. It’s one way or the other and we have chosen to
use the electronic option.
You can receive the GWSA Email Updates by completing
the steps described below:
1. To begin, please send an email to:
subscribe@gwsa-guelph.ca. If you’d like, you can
put the word subscribe in the Subject line or you can
skip that part. In just a few minutes, you’ll get a
message with a link.
2. Click on the link you received, fill in the appropriate
fields, and click “Subscribe to List”.
3. To ensure you really want to receive GWSA
email updates – and to make sure all email addresses
are error-free – we’ll send a message asking
you to confirm.
4. Once you respond to the confirmation message,
your registration is complete and you’ll receive
our Welcome letter.
We have also placed a link under the “Popular
Links” section on all web pages on the GWSA website.
Clicking on this link will also initiate the signup
process. This will take you to step 2 (above).
Simply follow through with steps 2 to 4 to complete
the process.
You can expect to receive your first GWSA Email
Update approximately mid-month after you sign up!
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Attention all clubs: Because of the building closure from July 2-August 6, we will
have no access for mail or hand-written information from your clubs. It CAN be sent
to us by email (sentinel@gwsa-guelph.ca) which we access from home, so that we
can put your club information in the September issue.
If you have requirements for score cards, etc., please let us know well before the
closure so that they can be printed. The Centre re-opens on August 7.
THE EDITOR’S PAGE by Linda Green
You're Canadian if:
- You know how to pronounce and spell Saskatchewan
without blinking.
- You put on shorts as soon as it hits plus 10, even if there
is still snow around.
- You are excited whenever an American television show
mentions Canada.
- You have Canadian Tire money in your kitchen drawers.
- You drive on a highway, not a freeway.
- You drink pop, not soda.
- You go to the washroom, not the restroom.
- You order “double double” at Tim Horton’s.
- Someone accidently stepped on your foot. You
apologize.
- Someone in a Home Depot offers you assistance...and
they don’t work there.
- You measure distance in hours.
- You have switched from “heat” to “A/C” in the same
day and back again.
- You can drive 90 km/hr through 2 feet of snow during a
raging blizzard without flinching.
- You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a
snowsuit.
- The speed limit on the highway is 80 km and you’re
going 90 and everybody is passing you.
- Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are
filled with snow.
- You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still
winter and road construction.
- You have more miles on your snow blower than your
car.
- You find 2 degrees “a little” chilly.
Program Manager, Senior Services from Adam Rutherford
9
Hello Sentinel readers, Sentineliens??
I’m absolutely thrilled to take this opportunity to
introduce myself to all of you and invite all of you to
pop in and introduce yourself to me as well.
My name is Adam Rutherford and I’m the acting
Program Manager – Programming and Community
Development for the City of Guelph…but I’m just as
happy if you think of me as Wendy Kornelsen’s temporary
replacement as she assumes another role with
the City. Wendy has given me the lay of the land at
the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre and I’m
excited to build on her amazing work and develop
new opportunities while I’m in this role.
My background and passion is in program development
and supporting good work in our facilities.
Nothing thrills me more than watching a great idea
turn into something meaningful in our community.
While much of my work to date has focused on
youth and recreation-based initiatives, I can’t wait to
start these conversations in and around the Evergreen.
My door is always open and I love brainstorming
over coffee, so please come see me about
any ideas that you might have.
On a personal note, I have 2 wonderful children:
my daughter Sierra, who just graduated from the
University of Guelph and my son Avery, who’s in
grade 11. They keep me on my toes, challenge me
regularly and are my proudest accomplishment. I also
have a beautiful dog at home that competes with
the kids for my attention…she doesn’t give me any
attitude though. I also play soccer regularly – I
should say “football” for our UK readers. I’m looking
forward to learning about your families and interests
too.
that is required. No fitness experience is necessary.
their home and the Program. The commitment
is one-half day per month.
Administraon Office — 519‐837‐5696
The Legal Clinic of Guelph and Wellington County
provides free legal advice for low-income community
members in Guelph and Wellington County, including
seniors in receipt of the Guaranteed Income Supplement
(GIS) along with their Old Age Security (OAS).
Our main areas of practice include:
Rental tenancies, including care homes, evictions
and maintenance concerns;
Income maintenance, including eligibility for
Canada Pension Plan – disability (CPP-d), Employment
Insurance, the Ontario Disability Support
Program (ODSP), and Ontario Works (OW) and,
Consumer protection, including door-to-door
sales, collection agencies, and garnishment of social
insurance program income.
We are located within the Guelph Community
Health Centre at 176 Wyndham Street North in
Guelph. We can also be reached:
By telephone: 519-821-2100
Online: www.gwlegalclinic.ca
By email: gwlegalclinic@lao.on.ca
We also provide referral information on other areas
of law including wills and power of attorney, family
law, criminal law, debt and bankruptcy, and civil litigation.
For these areas of law, we often refer to the
Law Society Referral Service (LSRS) through the
Law Society of Ontario. The LSRS provides a free 30-
minute consultation with a lawyer or paralegal to help
you determine your rights and options. LSRS can be
reached online at www.lsuc.on.ca/lsrs or on their crisis
line at 1-855-947-5255.
Top 10 Legal Concerns for Seniors*
Brought to you by the Legal Clinic
letter to the agency saying that you dispute the debt
and suggest the matter be taken to court. For more information
on the rules a collection agency must follow
or to make a complaint to the Consumer Protection
Branch about an agency, please visit: www.ontario.ca/
page/collection-agency-your-rights.
3. Can I correct an error on my credit report? Yes!
To correct information in your credit report that is inaccurate
or incomplete, you can ask the consumer reporting
agency to correct the error. You may need to
give proof to the agency that the information is not
correct. You also have the right to receive a free copy
of your credit report by contacting the consumer reporting
agencies: Equifax Canada or TransUnion Canada.
For more information or to make a complaint
about a consumer reporting agency to the Consumer
Protection Branch, please visit: www.ontario.ca/page/
credit-reports.
4. What is the CRA scam? In some cases, fraudsters
are calling consumers impersonating the Canada
Revenue Agency (CRA) and requesting payment for
discrepancies from past filed taxes. Fraudsters threaten
consumers that failure to pay will result in additional
fees, jail time and/or deportation. In other cases, consumers
receive an email or text with a link to a website
that looks like the actual CRA website, in order to get
a refund. Consumers are asked to fill in their personal
information such as Social Insurance Number (SIN)
and are then subject to identity fraud.
5. How do I protect myself from the CRA scam? In
most cases, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will
use registered mail to contact consumers – not email or
phone. You can contact the CRA directly to confirm
you owe back taxes or are entitled to a refund. You
should never provide personal information over the
telephone, by text or email. The CRA does not request
payment by gift cards or bitcoin. For more information,
contact the Government of Canada’s Anti-
Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
1. Can my senior’s income be garnished? No! The
income you receive through the Canada Pension Plan
(CPP), Old Age Security (OAS), and Guaranteed Income
Supplement (GIS) cannot be garnished for consumer
debt.
2. What do I do if a collection agency is contacting
me and I disagree with the debt? A collection agency
can’t keep contacting you if you send a registered
6. Are there other ongoing scams? Yes, the Guelph
Police report that there are many other scams you
should watch out for. In the anti-virus scam, you could
be contacted by a fraudster claiming to be Microsoft,
wanting to remotely access your computer. In the traffic
infringement scam, fraudsters claim to be police
and issue a false ticket via email. In the free trial scam,
The Day Before - Nov. 09, 2018
Plans are currently underway for a reprise
of last year’s Remembrance Day recognition,
predominantly following the same format
for 2018. While it may seem a little early
to project ahead 5 months in advance,
there is a lot of planning to do.
One of the elements of the presentation
we’d like to repeat is the taped interviews
with a few individuals directly involved personally,
or who are close to relatives or
loved ones who have first-hand experience
with Canada’s Armed Services in any capacity
and in any conflict or peace keeping
effort with the UN. That would include from
WWII to current day, either from the veterans
perspective or those still on active duty.
If you are interested in having your story
told, or would like to share the experiences
of a loved one, please contact Ross Coulter
by email i_am_rossie@hotmail.com or
BILL RAFFAN, PAST PRESIDENT OF THE
GWSA FROM 2008-2011
Bill Raffan passed away at
the Guelph General Hospital
on Thursday, May 3,
2018, in his 84th year.
Beloved husband of 56
years to Norma. Loving
father of the late Lynne
Raffan (2012), Christine
Raffan and Sharon (Floyd)
Jones.
Bill graduated from
Queen’s University, class
of 1961 Bachelor of Science,
Electrical Engineering and was proud to be a
“Professional Engineer” his entire life. He spent
most of his career at General Electric Canada where
he held posts in Peterborough, Vancouver and
Guelph.
Outside of work, Bill was a dedicated family man
who loved to play with his children and used his
handyman skills to do many projects around the
house. He was a true engineer at heart and was very
particular about any project he worked on. He was
involved in many community groups, such as the
T S - J/J/A 2018 — V. 42, N. 10
Stained Glass Guild, the Men’s Club of Guelph, was
part of the Engineering Iron Ring Ceremonies at the
University of Guelph and also former Chairman of
Guelph Hydro.
He was President of the GWSA from 2008 to 2011
and on the executive of the Computer Club for many
years.
He also enjoyed such hobbies as tennis, squash,
ballroom dancing with Norma, and playing euchre
and poker with his grandkids. He and Norma had
many happy vacations throughout Canada, Great
Britain, South America and the Caribbean. Bill loved
computers and he kept up with technology trends for
many years into his retirement. Bill’s kindness, dedication
to family and friends, dry sense of humour,
mischievous grins and bright smile will be missed by
all.
A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life was held
at Trinity United Church in Guelph on Friday, May
11, 2018.
A tree will be planted in memory of William G.
(Bill) Raffan in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest,
University of Guelph Arboretum. Dedication service,
Sunday, September 16, 2018 at 2:30 pm.

The Hearing Improvement
Committee of Guelph
TALKING TO A PERSON WHO IS
HARD OF HEARING

Make sure your face can be clearly seen and
face the person.
Speaking with hands in front of the face, or
eating, chewing or smoking can make lip
reading difficult.
Ask to use written messages if accuracy is
essential. With hearing loss, mishearings
tend to become more frequent.
Don’t talk too fast — speak a trifle slower,
in a comfortably loud voice, but use normal
phrasing, not separated words, and no
shouting.
Don’t lower your voice at the end of a
sentence.
Speak clearly, especially key words, and
use appropriate gestures. Repeat only once,
then rephrase.
**BOOK NOOK NOTICE**
Due to the Evergreen Centre being
closed July 2 to August 6, we are
asking our members not to sign out any
books or DVD’s during the last week
June 25 to June 29 since you will be
unable to return them for a month.
We appreciate your co-operation and
look forward to seeing you all again
when the centre re-opens.
their own media to work with, examples
of which are acrylic painting,
Bunka, drawing, pastels, porcelain
textile arts, watercolour painting and
others. Artists will need to provide all
the materials they need to complete
their work and be prepared to share
their technique and insights with other
artists. The membership in Art Studio
in 2 is limited to 24 and yearly membership
costs $27.00 including HST,
in addition to the GWSA membership.
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by using
a unique combination of punch needle
and special silk-like rayon thread
(yarn). When completed, many pictures
resemble delicately shaded
paintings. In fact, the needle is held
(Continued from page 19)
and operates in much the same manner
as an artist’s brush or pencil. The
Bunka artist uses many different
stitch techniques in order to achieve
the desired effect of depth and interest,
but unlike other forms of needle
art, there are no knots to tie and mistakes
are easily corrected. This group
is for all skill levels and meets every
Wednesday from 9:15 a.m. to noon.
Hearing Improvement
The Hearing Improvement Committee
of Guelph has the objective of
helping fellow citizens with hearing
loss by: co-operating with and assisting
professionals who deal with it;
promoting hearing accessibility within
our own community; holding regular
information sessions to encourage
greater understanding of the problem
and what is available to help it.
We meet the first Wednesday of
each month from October through
May from 2-3:30 pm. We discuss
problems affecting those with hearing
loss and try to find solutions. Our
meetings also have a social component.
Everyone Welcome
Into Focus Photography Club
Summer’s here and the time is right
for photographing our families and
our communities and the members of
the Into Focus Photography Club will
keep our cameras at the ready. Our
themes for the three summer months
are hair styles in June, nature macros
in July, and feet in September. The
July closure of the centre will have an
impact on our display in the restaurant
but will not affect our picture
taking.
We still have a couple of weeks to
complete our scavenger hunt challenge.
We were presented with a list
of 20 subjects and challenged to photograph
as many as possible by June
15. Keep an eye on our website
(https://intofocus.smugmug.com/
Challenges/Challenge-3-Scavenger-
Hunt/) to see some of the entries.
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment ranging
from mobile phones and point
and shoot cameras to fancy DSLR
models. We share a common interest
in photography as a hobby and we
learn from each other. New members
are always welcome.
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit a
perforated polymer ball over a net.
The sport shares features of other racquet
sports: the dimensions and layout
of a badminton court and a net
and rules similar to tennis, with a few
modifications.
This sport is for people of all ages
who are looking for some fun, laughter,
socialization and exercise. It’s
costs $10.00 plus HST to join the
Everwhite Ski Club. You register and
Please be reminded that the Membership and Marketing
These forms are available from the program chair and are in
interested in learning the game, or
have played in the past and want to
get back into it, please drop by the
Snooker Room. You will be assured a
warm welcome and a place to try
your hand at one of our three tables.
The Snooker Room is open weekdays
between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm and
any other time the Evergreen Centre
may be open.
The primary focus of the club is to
have fun, build friendships and socialize.
Your snooker skill level is
irrelevant so don’t feel intimidated if
you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the club room up
to three times without charge to help
with their decision on whether to
join. While most of the current members
are men, there is a small group
of women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings), so
ladies, don’t be shy to give it a try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current fee
of $70 (plus tax) buys you access to
the Snooker Room anytime it is open
and all the snooker you care to play.
Texas Hold’Em
Why not come out and have fun with
us? We are averaging about 16 players
a week and are situated in the
Dining Room.
We charge $1.50 per week and
pretty well all of that goes back to the
GWSA. We play from 6:30 to 8:30
pm.
Each player starts off with $500 in
real casino chips and, as we do not
play for money, we work on a point
system; the one with the most points
each week is the winner. We play
until there is only one player left or
8:30 pm comes, whichever comes
first.
We will gladly teach anyone who
is interested in playing. Just follow
the laughter to find us.
We have about six ladies playing at
present and would always welcome
more. We do not want to become a
men’s club! Remember, you have to
be a member of GWSA to play.
Osteo Fitness
Part of living well with osteoporosis
involves movement and exercise.
Physical activity plays an essential
role in the treatment of osteoporosis
by stimulating or applying a load on
our bones to maintain their structure
and strength. Four types of exercise
are necessary in the management of
osteoporosis: strength, posture and
core stability, balance, and weight
bearing. By improving your strength,
balance and posture, in turn you reduce
the risk of falling.
7. How do I protect myself from identity theft? The
RCMP has many tips for preventing identity theft including
that you should be wary of unsolicited e-mails,
telephone calls or mail attempting to extract personal
or financial information from you. You should limit the
identity documents you carry in your wallet. You
should check your credit reports, bank and credit card
statements and report any irregularities promptly. You
should swipe your debit or credit card yourself and not
allow a cashier to do it for you. You should always
shield your personal identification number when using
an ATM or a PIN pad. You should shred personal and
financial documents before putting them in the garbage.
For more tips, visit the RCMP at www.rcmpgrc.gc.ca/scams-fraudes/id-theft-vol-eng.htm.
8. Can my landlord evict me in the winter? Yes, tenants
can be evicted in the winter. However, landlords
can only evict for reasons outlined in the Residential
Tenancies Act (i.e., arrears). Landlords must provide
the proper notice of termination. Tenants have the right
to fight the eviction through a hearing at the Landlord
and Tenant Board. If you have questions about your
tenancy, contact the Legal Clinic.
Can I get help with the cost of my electricity bill?
Yes! The Electricity Support Program (OESP) assists
those in lower-income homes. If you are a customer of
an electricity utility, the OESP will reduce the cost of
your household electricity by applying a monthly credit
directly to your bill. The credit amount will depend on
how many people live in your home and your combined
household income. For information, please contact
the OESP at https://ontarioelectricitysupport.ca/.
Where can I find out about resources and services
available to seniors in Ontario? The Ontario Senior
Guide, through the government of Ontario, provides
helpful information on resources available to seniors in
Ontario, including tax credits, health, caregiving, housing,
driving and staying safe. The Guide can be found
at: www.ontario.ca/page/guide-programs-and-servicesseniors.
I have a legal concern. Where can I look for information?
Community Legal Education Ontario
(CLEO) produces practical legal information to help
people understand and exercise their legal rights.
CLEO provides information on health and disability
law (i.e., continuing power of attorney for property),
consumer law, abuse and family violence, and more.
You can reach CLEO at www.cleo.on.ca. If you are
unable to find the answers you need, please contact us
at the Legal Clinic for assistance or a referral.
*This is general information and not legal advice. If
you need legal advice, please contact the Legal Clinic.
9. Are Care Homes protected under the Residential
Tenancies Act? Yes! A care home is a place you
rent, where you get health care services, attendant care,
or help with daily living. If you live in a care home,
you are a tenant and have legal rights. If you have
questions about your tenancy, contact the Legal Clinic.
10. Is there social housing available to seniors? Yes!
Rent-geared-to-income housing is available through
the County of Wellington’s Housing Services, including
apartment buildings catering to senior tenants. The
County also has formal service agreements with a number
of Retirement Homes in the area, where tenants can
receive housing along with related supports. If you disagree
with a decision made by Housing Service, you
can request a review within 10 days and can contact the
Legal Clinic for assistance with the review. To apply
for the Centralized Waitlist, contact the County of
Wellington’s Housing Services at 519-837-5492
UNICEF Foreign Coin Boxes:
Do you have foreign coins left over from a wonderful
holiday abroad? When you see them on your
dresser, do they remind you that you should do
something about them? UNICEF Guelph has the perfect
solution. We are inaugurating a UNICEF collection
box system in Guelph whereby people can drop
off their unused foreign coins, and the proceeds will
be sent on to UNICEF Canada to be used in their
children’s programs around the world. The Evergreen
Centre is one of those places.
UNICEF is the world’s leading child-focused humanitarian
and development agency, and is on the
ground in at least 150 countries, ready to help when
disaster strikes. Through innovative programs and
advocacy work, the rights of children are secured and
lives are saved. It is supported entirely by voluntary
donations and helps all children regardless of race,
religion or politics.
Next time you’re at the Evergreen Centre, look for
the box at the Front Desk with the UNICEF icon labelled
“Foreign Coins for Kids”. Donate and clean
off your dresser at the same time! For more information,
GUELPH MUSEUMS’ SUMMER EVENTS
Guelph Museums would love the opportunity to share
information with GWSA about what is happening and
upcoming at Guelph Museums. There is always something
exciting going on at Guelph Museums (Guelph
Civic Museum, McCrae House, and Locomotive 6167)
that would be of great interest to the older adult community.
Guelph Civic Museum, located at 52 Norfolk Street,
showcases Guelph’s history through permanent and
changing exhibits, a fun and interactive families gallery
and special events and activities.
McCrae House National Historic Site, located at 108
Water Street, is the birthplace of Lt. Col. John
McCrae, doctor, soldier and author of “In Flanders
Fields”. Exhibitions provide information about his
upbringing in Guelph, his life, and legacy. The house
and grounds are enhanced by engaging programs including
outdoor tea and theatre programs during the
summer.
Locomotive 6167 was built in 1940, one of 203
“Northern” locomotives used by Canadian National
Railways for passenger and freight service. After being
retired from active service, the locomotive was
gifted to the City of Guelph in 1967. It has been lovingly
restored by volunteers, and can be viewed at its
Farquhar Street location near downtown Guelph's
transportation hub.
We also offer guided tours and community visits
which provide unique and engaging life-long learning
opportunities. The Museum will come to you. Museum
educators are available to provide presentations on:
The History of Guelph, Growing Guelph, The First
World War, The Life and Times of John McCrae, Two
Guelph Soldiers in the Great War, Great Guelphites,
and more!
A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK
Chris Fraser
The Book Nook —
“A Lending Library”
We are open Monday to
Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
* * * *
If you have enjoyed reading the
first 3 books in The Seven Sister
series, you will be happy to read
this great new book “The Pearl
Sister” by Lucinda Riley.
CeCe had always been in control,
but this time she was really
scared doing things alone. Nevertheless
she had decided to discover
her origins.
With just a black and white photograph
and the name of a female
pioneer in Australia, she set out to
find out more about this woman.
First she stopped in Thailand, but
after a short while she decided to
go to Railay Beach for a couple of
weeks, a place she had been happiest.
CeCe realized she needed to get
to Australia and find a town called
Broome. Once there, she soon became
friends with a local girl,
Chrissie, who was quite excited
when CeCe showed her the only
clue she had, the photograph.
Chrissie was sure she recognized
one of the men in the picture, who
she believed was a famous artist.
After CeCe went to a museum to
find out about Kitty Mercer, the
female pioneer’s name she was
given to help trace her ancestry,
CeCe listens to the tapes which tell
the life story of Kitty Mercer.
Soon CeCe began to believe that
she belonged in this vast continent
and has a sense of belonging.
This is a wonderful story of
CeCe finding her ancestry and is
another great book in this series. I
hope you will enjoy reading it as
much as I did.
Please remember that the Evergreen
Centre will be closed July
2 to August 6 and we ask our
members not to sign out any
books during the week prior to
the closure, June 25 to 29, due to
not being able to return them for
a month. We appreciate your cooperation.
I hope you all have a
great summer.
Happy reading!
COMFORT FOOD
by Sylvia Grant
Comfort food. Toasted bagel dripping with butter. Baked
macaroni and cheese casserole, very creamy, very cheesy,
topped with a sprinkling of buttered cracker crumbs and shredded
cheese. Lemon pie, a combination taste of tart and sweet, topped with
stiff, lightly browned peaks of meringue. Apple pie, slices of Northern Spies,
soft but firm, bathed in a sauce of sugar, butter, cinnamon with a hint of maple
syrup. All this nestled in a light, flakey bed of pastry and covered with a delicately
browned and sugary pastry blanket. Add to this a scoop of ice cream -
vanilla or maple walnut.
Ah, comfort food - donuts warm and squishy, filled with strawberry jelly,
deep fried and coated with sugar. Fresh from the bakery oven. Comfort
food. Why is it so good for the spirit and so bad for the body?
If only we were bears. We could spend the autumn, Thanksgiving until
Christmas, feasting with delight and then in January, curl up in a cave for the
rest of the winter where we would burn up all the extra calories, not by walking,
running, or weight lifting. We would burn up the calories just by sleeping.
In spring when we emerged from our cave, despite the indulgences of autumn,
we would be slim and trim, just in time for bathing suit weather. It would be
having your cake and eating it too with no extra pounds to show for it. The ultimate
in comfort food.
Like to Write??
The Writer’s Club, one of the longest standing activities offered by the
GWSA, is in need of new members. Membership has dropped in the last year
due to the aging process and/or the poor health of some members. You may
rest assured that writing or membership in the Club are not contributing factors.
We need people who have a passion for expressing themselves with the written
word and would like to share their work with fellow members whether that
work be poetry, prose, essay, story, narrative or memoir. We take a nonacademic
approach insofar as we do not teach writing and accept all levels of
expertise. Nothing a member writes and shares need be grammatically correct,
nor will it be critiqued. It remains to the individual member what it is and how
they choose to write about it.
The primary benefits of membership focus on the stimulation of one’s creative
juices, the power of words, developing self-confidence through sharing of
written work and the social aspects of mingling with like-minded people. Every
meeting ends with a word challenge you may only experience by becoming
a member. Every two months, a singular topic is presented for members to
write about and read. Four weeks are usually allotted for completion. As mentioned,
we do not critique, but we do ooh and aah and laugh a lot.
The Club meets on the second and third Thursday of each month, except July
and August, in the Boardroom at 1:00 pm. A nominal fee of $2.00 per session
attended has normally been charged but is currently under review. As you read
this, there are two remaining meetings. June 14 and June 16 before our summer
hiatus. We start up again in September, but not until the 27th as the Centre will
not be available on the 13th.
Do give us a thought and drop by during any scheduled meeting to see who
we are and how we operate. You will be more than welcome! For any further
information, please contact Ross Coulter at 519-821-3993.
CLOUDS
by Ross Coulter
I know, without doubt, from
whence they come,
Garnered from earthly waters below,
Beads of moisture gathered in proliferate sum
Parading onward surely but slow.
White and fluffy in odd shapes as they pass me by,
Journeying relentlessly across the sky,
But there’s a question unanswered, something I’d
like to know,
After they’ve passed, where do they go?
How far have they travelled since they were made?
Will they gather and darken somewhere down the
road
And with thunder and lightning drop their watery
load?
Surely it will happen and the skies will clear
As the clouds seen earlier disappear.
THE MAGIC OF NATURE
by Julie Jane Dowdle
An eagerly anticipated rain
Produces a surge in growth
In the garden…
The likes of which
Is astounding.
A small green plant
Suddenly becomes a clump…
Tiny flower buds
Make an appearance
As if by magic.
Tree branches bend and sway
Seemingly encumbered
By a substantial, unexpected
Growth spurt.
Flower heads are fuller…
Their colours deeper…richer,
Leaves wider…greener,
And stems of vines
Reaching high above
The fence tops.
Bare spots in the lawn
Are indiscernible
Among the taller…lusher blades
Of wavy, darker green grass.
Colours, overall, appear bolder
And more substantial…
The hues more noticeable
Before the sun again beats down,
Draining the lush new growth
Of such a fabulous display.
We all love the sunshine…
There’s no doubt about
It’s instilling feelings in us
Of complete wellbeing,
And enabling the flora
To benefit from
Those glorious golden rays.
But, truly, there’s nothing
Like the magnificent spectacle
Of a thriving garden
After a nurturing rainfall.
