President’s Message from Dorothe Fair
Hello Everyone,
Phrases like ‘blinding, blowing snow’, ‘expecting up to
15 centimetres’, ‘it's a slippery drive’, ‘bundle up there's
a wicked wind’ and ‘don't forget to get your flu shot’ are
messages we’re tired of hearing.
Where is Wiarton Willie?? I need to talk to him!!
It's time for us to say, “Enough frigid Arctic weather; come in
warm and gentle Spring.”
But for now get cozy, read on and get caught up on last month’s
events and exciting events to come.
February:
1. The GWSA presented a final report to the City General Manager,
Parks and Recreation Department, Heather Flaherty outlining our
Programming needs and requests for the new proposed South End
Recreation Centre (SERC)--2020-2021.
The GWSA SERC committee gathered input from the Activity
Leaders through the Program Committee Co-Chairs, Kerry
Detlor and Tony Pellizzari. This input was greatly appreciated and
helpful in compiling our Report to the City.
REMINDER: Our Activity Leaders have a very important role in
communicating information from the GWSA Board to their Group
Members and bringing comments and suggestions back to the Program
Committee which is then documented in the Program Committee
minutes that all Board Directors receive.
This is why we emphasize the importance of ALL ACTIVITY
LEADERS attending the monthly Program meeting.
Here is a list of the topics the GWSA SERC Report covered:
1. Common areas for welcome, socializing with WI-FI access.
2. Designated scheduled Seniors Days to offer Seniors programs.
3. Accessibility: Handicap Parking, Transit and Mobility bus schedules,
location of washrooms.
4. Multi-purpose rooms (kitchenette), generous storage for program
equipment and supplies.
5. Reception and registration counter for GWSA members.
6. Use of shared space: walking track, gymnasium, outdoor trails.
Very high Priority: STORAGE, STORAGE, STORAGE and PARK-
ING, PARKING, PARKING!
I'll keep you posted with any future developments.
2. FREE TRANSPORTATION to the RIVER RUN CENTRE....
This is a wonderful offer for Seniors. The River Run Centre is
pleased to announce the return of the Windjammers, Pops Wind Ensemble.
This much anticipated concert will mark the group’s 25th
Anniversary. River Run is pleased to offer FREE transportation from
the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre departing at 6 pm on
HEALTHY SNACK IDEAS FOR SENIORS
Every person, including seniors, needs snacks daily,
despite what you may have heard about them causing
weight gain. The key is to factor snacks into your overall
daily calorie intake. Snacking helps to increase your intake
of vital nutrients and boosts your overall health. So
keep these healthy snack ideas in mind the next time you
go grocery shopping.
Calcium-rich Snacks
Calcium, the most abundant mineral in your body, plays
a role in a wide variety of functions such as muscle function,
nerve transmission and heart function. It’s also essential
for building and maintaining bones. As you get
older, bone loss is a particular concern. Also, you’re more
vulnerable to cardiovascular diseases. Add calcium-rich
snacks to your daily diet. Good options include low-fat or
fat-free cheese cubes or yogurt, or sardines on whole
wheat crackers.
Fruits
Fruits are loaded with nutrients such as vitamins, minerals
and fibre that help to fight the damage and deterioration
that is associated with aging. For instance, carotenoids
are potent antioxidants that help to fight free radical
damage and inflammation, which triggers immune responses
related to aging and disease. They can help to
prevent or treat inflammatory conditions such as cancer,
heart disease or arthritis. Eat about 2 cups of fruits, such
as berries, cherries, apples, oranges and pineapple, daily.
Vegetables
Like fruits, vegetables are also rich in vitamins, minerals,
fibre and antioxidants. However, non-starchy vegetables
are much lower in sugar than fruits, especially green
leafy vegetables. As you get older, you’re more likely to
develop insulin resistance, which means your body cannot
efficiently use the insulin it produces. This makes you
susceptible to type 2 diabetes and other health problems.
Due to their lower sugar content, vegetables help to keep
your blood glucose levels stable so your body doesn’t
need to produce as much insulin. Try snacks such as carrot
or celery sticks with dip, veggie kebabs with a mix of
vegetables on a skewer, or grilled asparagus with low-fat
cheese wrapped in a whole-grain tortilla.
Considerations
Timing your snacks properly throughout the day makes
a difference. For instance, if you’re hungry but don’t intend
to eat for about an hour, choose a 100- to 200-calorie
snack, such as a handful of popcorn or a medium piece of
fruit. If you won’t be eating for a few hours, choose a
snack of about 200 to 250 calories, such as a sliced apple
with peanut butter or a small whole-grain muffin with a
cup of low-fat milk. Also, keep healthy snacks on hand so
you don’t turn to less healthy options when you become
hungry throughout the day.
Special Printing For Members
Do you have a need for printing (i.e., bookmarks, booklets, calendars,
dinner menus/programs, club bylaws, annual reports), large or small
quantities, black & white print (5¢ per page) or colour (25¢ per page)?
If so, please contact Carol Croft or Linda Green, either in the Sentinel
office (we’re not here all the time, though) or by email at sentinel@gwsaguelph.ca,
or leave a message at the front desk. You must be a GWSA
member to take advantage of this.
Program Manager, Senior Services from Wendy Kornelsen
7
Wiarton Willy predicted six more weeks of winter,
and that time is soon up! There seems to be a spring
in everyone’s step around the Centre. Spring/
Summer registration begins Wednesday, March 7th,
at 7:30 am. You can register at the same time for
programs offered in both the spring and summer session.
It is a good idea to register as early as possible
to reserve your spot in a program. Registration can
be done in person, over the phone, or on the web. If
you need assistance with your registration, please
contact Tracy at 519-823-1291 x2454.
Recreation Services and the GWSA believe that everyone
should have an opportunity to participate in
recreation programs and activity groups. The City of
Guelph has a fee assistance program in place to ensure
that cost is not a barrier to participating. GWSA
works with the City to support this program.
There are many programs offered this spring and
summer. Here are highlights of a few:
Physically active courses ranging from Qi Gong,
to Strength Training, and Pickleball.
Consider taking up tennis at one of the many outdoor
courts.
Find your inner artist in a calligraphy class, or
perhaps pastel painting or portrait drawing and
painting is something you have always wanted to
try.
Sign up for one of the many computer courses —
Facebook, Word, Skype.
If you have a great idea for a course, please speak to
Jocelyn Pedersen.
FAIR (fee assistance is recreation) is available for
GWSA memberships and City of Guelph Recreation
Programs. Based on financial criteria, you will receive
a percentage off your registration fee. This is a
confidential program. You can pick up an application
form at the Centre or call 519-822-1260 x2645 to
speak directly with staff. If you have any questions,
please speak to the Recreation Co-ordinator and she
will be able to help you access this service.
Our annual Indoor Garage Sale is Saturday, April 21,
8:30 am -12:30 pm. Tables are available for rent.
This is also a great day for some shopping — the sun
is always shining in the Evergreen Auditorium. Free
admission.
At risk of sounding like a broken record, I want to
remind everyone that we are planning work on the
parking lot at Evergreen for the summer. This work
will involve closing the Centre from July 2 to August
6th. The Centre will re-open on August 7th. We look
forward to serving you again at the Centre on August
7th. As with all construction, dates are fluid and
changes do happen. I will endeavour to keep you upto-date
through the Sentinel and on the City website
at www.guelph.ca/seniors as more information becomes
available.
Help make a difference to support seniors who have
trouble getting out on their own. The Outreach
half-day per month.
Scheduling and time commitment are flexible
according to your availability.
Please contact Maryanne Wilford at 519-837-5665
Nutrition Month 2018
UNLOCK THE POTENTIAL OF FOOD
Every year in March, Dietitians of Canada organizes
Nutrition Month with the goal of making it a little easier
for Canadians to choose, eat and enjoy healthy
foods. The Nutrition Month 2018 campaign theme is
Unlock the Potential of Food. This campaign has five
topics that explore the potential of food:
Potential to fuel: Stay energized by planning nutritious
snacks into your day. Snacks are foods or drinks
that are consumed between meals offering some nutritional
value and an energy boost. Choosing healthy
snacks can be a great way to get all the nutrients your
body needs each day. Helpful snacking tips to remember
include planning ahead, being aware of portion
sizes, listening to your hunger cues, avoiding distracted
snacking, and snacking on vegetables.
Potential to discover: Foster healthy eating habits
in children by teaching them to shop and cook. A
great way to teach children about food is to let them
shop and cook with you. Be a role model and don’t be
afraid to try a new food or a new recipe no matter
your age.
Potential to prevent: Understand how food can
help prevent chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes and
heart disease. Lifestyle factors, including what we eat,
can influence our health. A nutritious diet can help
prevent illness and can lower the risk of developing
chronic diseases. Nourishing foods for disease prevention
include: vegetables and fruit; whole grains;
legumes like beans and lentils; nuts and seeds; milk,
cheese and yogurt; fish, seafood and poultry; and
healthy oils like canola and olive oil.
T S - M 2018 — V. 42, N. 7
Potential to heal: Learn how food can promote
healing and how dietitians work in health care teams
to make a difference. Dietitians use foods to help you
get the nutrients needed for the growth and repair of
your body. Their advice helps prevent disease, treat
conditions and keep the immune system healthy.
Potential to bring us together: Enjoy the benefits of
bringing families and friends together with food.
Older adults who eat as part of a group have better
diets, improved nutrient intake and lower rates of malnutrition.
Most studies done on the benefits of family
meals start with sharing at least four meals together
per week.
During the month of March, the Community Food
Advisors will feature a Nutrition Month display at the
CSS whiteboard. Be sure to stop by to check out the
display and pick up some resources to help you
Unlock the Potential of Food.
Art in the Hall
The Art in the Hall project is mandated
to display good art work in the
halls of the Evergreen Centre. The art
for March is produced by the artists in
Art Studio in 2 until March 17 and
then for the rest of the month by the
“West End Artists.” If you are interested
in having your work in a solo
exhibition, or if you are interested in
having a few pieces of your work as
part of a group display at the Evergreen
Centre in 2018, contact Ted
Pritchard at 519-826-6121 or
tpritcha@rogers.com by the end of
March 2018.
If you are interested in sitting on the
Art in the Hall Committee for selecting
art for display at the Evergreen
Centre, and assisting with the hanging
of the art, also contact Ted.
Art Studio in 2
Art Studio in 2 is an art group working
out of Room 2 at the Evergreen
Centre on alternate Tuesday evenings
from 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm starting
the first week of the month and on
alternate Wednesday afternoons from
12:00 pm until 4:00 pm starting the
second week of the month. The artists
in this club choose their own media to
work with, examples of which are
acrylic painting, Bunka, drawing, pastels,
porcelain painting, printmaking,
stitchery/textile arts, watercolour
painting and others. Artists will need
to provide all the materials they need
to complete their work and be prepared
to share their technique and insights
with other artists. The membership
in Art Studio in 2 is limited to 24
and yearly membership costs $27.00
including HST, in addition to the
GWSA membership. If you are interested
in joining Art Studio in 2 for
2018, contact Ted Pritchard at 519-
826-6121 or tpritcha@rogers.com.
Badminton
On February 1, 2018, the Ontario Senior
Games Association hosted a tournament
in Kitchener at the KW Badminton
Club. It was a round robin format
for women, men, and mixed doubles,
55+ and 65+.
Our teams did very well. In the
Men’s Doubles 65+ group, Jeff Millard
and George Spence won Gold,
Alan Green and Ross Langlands won
Silver and Randy Taylor and Carl
Insley won Bronze. In the Men’s 55+
group, Charles Tse and Scott Watson
won Gold.
There were 3 mixed teams. Jeff
Millard and Karen LeDuc, took Gold,
Randy Taylor and Cella Sheppard,
took Silver, and Charles Tse and Val
Butler, took Bronze.
All the teams enjoyed their games
and were happy with the results. Our
club is proud to have so many talented
players.
Our Badminton Club welcomes all
from beginners to experienced and
competitive players. Join us as many
as 6 times a week for friendly, active
games and competition at two locations.
We play at the West End Community
Centre on Monday and
Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 pm. At
the Evergreen Centre, play is on Tuesday
evening at 7 pm, Thursday at 9
am, Friday at 10 am, and Sunday afternoons
at 1:15 pm.
We do our best to keep members
alerted of any changes to our times or
cancellations. Racquets are available
for short-term loan and players are
required to wear indoor court shoes.
Your membership fee covers participation
at both locations. If you are
a member of the Guelph Wellington
Seniors Association, we allow 3 free
visits to give you a chance to discover
if you are able and will enjoy this very
active sport. The yearly fee is $60.00
and you must have an up-to-date
membership with GWSA to be a
member of our club. For further information
regarding our activities and
membership, contact Eleanor Stern at
519-837-2702.
We hope you will come out and
be delighted to welcome you.
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by using
a unique combination of punch needle
and special silk-like rayon thread
(yarn). When completed, many pictures
resemble delicately shaded
paintings. In fact, the needle is held
and operates in much the same manner
as an artist’s brush or pencil. The
Bunka artist uses many different stitch
techniques in order to achieve the desired
effect of depth and interest, but
unlike other forms of needle art, there
are no knots to tie and mistakes are
easily corrected. This group is for all
Canoe Club
“Everyone must believe in something,”
wrote Henry David Thoreau,
“and I believe I’ll go canoeing.” If
you are of like mind, consider joining
The Evergreen Canoe Club this year.
We meet on Thursday morning between
May and September. The usual
outing is a two- to three-hour paddle,
usually along the Grand, but sometimes
on the Eramosa, Speed, Conestoga
and Beaver Rivers too. You
don’t need your own boat as the Club
owns several canoes and safety equipment.
What you do need is comfort
in, on and around water, the strength
and balance to get in and out of a canoe
and carry it to the river (with 3
other people), ability to paddle for up
to 3-4 hours (with breaks), a willingness
to learn and a good sense of fun
and adventure. Since canoeing can be
rigorous, all potential members must
take the four-week training program
and pass a fitness evaluation before
being accepted into the Club. This is
for your own safety and that of the
other members. The dates of the training
programs are as follows:
Place: Evergreen Centre
Time: 6:30 – 9:00 pm
Thursday April 5 – Meet n’ Greet
Thursday April 12, 19, 26
You must be a member of GWSA to
join the Canoe Club. Due to Club
growth, the annual membership fee of
$40 plus $5.00 per paddle outing is
currently under review. The updated
fee structure will be available soon.
Into Focus Photography Club
The February theme for our club photographs
was monochrome. The pictures
will be hanging in the Evergreen
restaurant throughout March. The defining
feature of a monochrome photo
is to have different shades of only one
colour. This could be either black and
white, sepia, or any other colour.
When you are in the restaurant, look
for the ways our members approached
this challenge.
We recently introduced a new feature
for our members. It is a photographic
challenge. The first one is
letters of the alphabet. We are to take
photographs of things which resemble
a letter. Prizes will be awarded for
uniqueness, funniest and for the member
who captures the most letters.
On February 12, our monthly field
trip took us downtown to the Sleeman
Centre and the Quebec Street Mall.
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment ranging
from mobile phones and point and
shoot cameras to fancy DSLR models.
We share a common interest in photography
as a hobby and we learn
from each other. New members are
always welcome.
Pickleball
Our Clinic was a huge success. There
were 60 people who participated and
all left feeling it was informative and
very helpful to hone their pickleball
skills.
Big thanks go to our President,
Rudy Simon, for organizing and running
the Clinic. He designed and set
up all the tasks to help our members
work on improving their pickleball
skills. Thanks to the coaches and advanced
players who helped.
Hopefully the concept of the game
was understood by all levels of players,
because pickleball is a defensive
game and the rules help to make this
the basis of the game. (Keep the rally
going until the opponent makes a mistake).
Plans are already underway for our
in-house tournament. It will be for
ALL levels of players. The basis behind
it is fun, fun, fun. More will be
explained before the upcoming date.
Shuffleboard
Please be advised that the Evergreen
Seniors Community Centre will be
closed from July 2 until August 6 for
paving of the parking lot.
Shuffleboard will continue on Tuesdays
and Wednesdays from 1:30 pm
until 3:00 pm. The fee is $10.00 from
now until May 31 or $1.00 per visit.
We hope everyone will come out
and enjoy the day. Instruction is available.
Silvertones
The Silvertones Choir was formed
over 37 years ago and now boasts
over 50 members. The mixed group
of seniors share the love of singing -
songs old and new. They also love to
entertain with their singing and to
spread cheer.
The choir is now working on a new
repertoire of music for their winter/
spring sing-outs in local seniors’ and
retirement homes and residences.
Songs include Waltzing Matilda,
Ach Du Lieber Augustin, Mary Anne,
Allouette, Cockles and Mussels, All
Through the Night, Loch Lomond,
Greensleeves, La Cucaracha, Hava
Nagila, Shanandoah, Something to
Sing About, Rain, Rain, Beautiful
Rain and Go With a Song in Your
Heart.
March’s Sing-outs are:
March 16 at Riverside Glen, 60
Woodlawn Ave., at 2:30 pm
March 23 at Guelph Lake Commons,
Victoria Road N., at 2:30 pm
For more information about joining
the choir, please call Arlene McEllistrum
at 519-821-4332.
Skiing
It costs $10.00 plus HST to join the
Everwhite Ski Club. You register and
pay for Downhill Skiing at the front
desk of the Evergreen Centre. It helps
to own a 5-7 Pass purchased from
Blue Mountain. We ski every Monday
at Blue Mountain while there is
snow. We carpool by meeting at the
lower Evergreen Parking Lot by the
Enabling Garden at 8:00 am and return
to Guelph by 6:00 pm. Think
snow.
Contact Cathy Densmore (519) 822-
2220 for Ski Club information.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is composed
of a group of active, friendly
players with skill levels covering the
full spectrum from learner/beginner to
accomplished player. If you are interested
in learning the game, or have
played in the past and want to get
back into it, please drop by the
ATTENTION
Activity Leaders and Event Planners
Please be reminded that the Membership and Marketing
Committee will be pleased to place advertisements in selected
media when you submit a “Request for Publicity and
Advertising” form at least 6 weeks in advance of your event.
These forms are available from the program chair and are in
your activity manuals. Submit to the M&M mailbox or by email
to Judith.Carson@sympatico.ca. For free advertising of your
event, please contact the GWSA webmaster, Snap’d Calendar,
and the Guelph Mercury Tribune - Your Calendar.
Snooker Room. You will be assured a
warm welcome and a place to try your
hand at one of our three tables. The
Snooker Room is open weekdays between
9:00 am and 4:00 pm and any
other time the Evergreen Centre may
be open.
The primary focus of the club is to
have fun, build friendships and socialize.
Your snooker skill level is irrelevant
so don’t feel intimidated if you
are a beginner. Prospective members
may visit the club room up to three
times without charge to help with
their decision on whether to join.
While most of the current members
are men, there is a small group of
women who play regularly (typically
on Tuesday mornings), so ladies,
don’t be shy to give it a try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current fee
of $70 (plus tax) buys you access to
the Snooker Room anytime it is open
and all the snooker you care to play.
Texas Hold’Em
Why not come out and have fun with
us? We are averaging about 16 players
a week and are situated in the Dining
Room.
We charge $1.50 per week and pretty
well all of that goes back to the
GWSA. We play from 6:30 to 8:30
pm.
Each player starts off with $500 in
real casino chips and, as we do not
play for money, we work on a point
system; the one with the most points
each week is the winner. We play until
there is only one player left or 8:30
pm comes, whichever comes first.
We will gladly teach anyone who is
interested in playing. Just follow the
laughter to find us.
We have about six ladies playing at
present and would always welcome
more. We do not want to become a
men’s club! Remember, you have to
be a member of GWSA to play.
Walking Club
Our walking season is over and won’t
recommence until April. However,
we will still be keeping in touch with
one another and our last winter social
will be held on Thursday, March 8, in
Osteo Fitness
Part of living well with osteoporosis
involves movement and exercise.
Physical activity plays an essential
role in the treatment of osteoporosis
by stimulating or applying a load on
our bones to maintain their structure
and strength. Four types of exercise
are necessary in the management of
core stability, balance, and weight
bearing. By improving your
Focus on Travel by Jean McClelland
The Travel committee started 2018 by planning an
excellent bus trip – on a cold January day – to the
Greg Frewin Theatre in Niagara Falls. This terrific
magic show is similar to the Siegfried and Roy Show
in Las Vegas.
Afterwards, our excellent bus driver took us to see
the beauty of Niagara’s partially frozen falls. Although
the day was cold indeed, our trip participants
enjoyed the day and said they would go again.
We didn’t have a trip in February this year.
This month we are happily headed to Bingeman’s
Park to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a good oldfashioned
kitchen party with lunch and a show featuring
the “Celts” and world champion step dancer,
Andrew Carr.
St. Patrick’s Day
by Jean McClelland
Are there any Irish folk in this very elite crowd?
Do you have some green on or are you too proud?
Will you stop by the pub and drink some green beer?
Or are you going to sit back and laugh and jeer?
We should respect St. Patrick's Day with humour
and grace
And let those who enjoy it see a smile on your face.
The little wee Leprechauns are watching you all
Don't think they can't get you because you're too tall.
They will visit you in the night for making fun
And from that day forth every time you see the sun
It will be green!!
Our culture need holidays and customs to survive
To have some fun and to feel alive.
This has been a custom for many, many years
Whether you're Irish or not give your cheers.
A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK
Chris Fraser
The Book Nook —
“A Lending Library”
We are open Monday to
Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
* * * *
I have a really good book to tell
you about, “The Mountain Between
Us” by Charles Martin.
Ben Payne is a surgeon and is
anxious to return home and Ashley
Knox is trying to get home for her
wedding. Bad weather cancels all
flights but Ben decides to charter a
plane and try to beat the storm before
it hits Salt Lake City.
He finds Ashley, who he had
been talking to while waiting in the
terminal, and invites her to join
him on this charter flight.
The pilot agrees to take them in
his small plane, along with his dog,
and they set off. Suddenly the
plane plunges into Utah’s remote
wilderness in the dead of winter.
Ashley is badly injured and Ben
also suffers from broken ribs but
he struggles to get them out. They
figure their pilot had a heart attack
but somehow managed to get the
plane down without killing them
all.
With no chance of anyone finding
them in these mountains, Ben
has to figure out how to get them
down the mountain, keep them
warm and find food.
Fortunately, he and his wife Rachel
enjoy hiking, so he has
learned some useful skills on survival.
He is unable to move Ashley
with her broken leg so he figures
out a way to build a sled and attach
a harness to himself to pull her
along.
This story tells of the long days
trying to move down the mountain,
and the problems they have to
face. With Ben’s determination to
just put one foot in front of the other
for as long as he can until they
find help, and the humour they
sometimes manage, many days go
by with little or no food and several
miles of walking in deep snow.
This is a book you simply want
to keep on reading, and is now a
major motion picture. I hope you
enjoy it as much as I did.
Happy reading!
My Garden in January and June
by Sylvia Grant
My Ontario garden is not static. It goes through extreme
changes from the snow, the ice and the freezing
temperatures of January to the heat and humidity
of June. These seasonal changes create a number of
differences not only in temperature but in plant life,
colours, precipitation, wildlife and the mood of the
garden.
In January, my flower beds are covered with a thick
blanket of snow. The only sign of the perennials that
lie beneath are some dry brown stalks and seed heads
from last summer’s phlox, Siberian iris and sedum.
The stalks rustle in the north wind and catch snow
on and around them while the crowns of the plants
sleep peacefully below.
Evergreen trees and shrubs provide a green backdrop
to the snow-covered flower gardens and lawn.
Deciduous trees and shrubs reach out their bare
brown branches providing perches for blue jays and
cardinals. The jays and cardinals add flashes of bright
blue and red to the January garden whose predominant
colours are white, green and brown.
The mood of the garden in January fluctuates. On
stormy days with winds howling and snow swirling,
it feels like the garden is hosting the very demons of
hell. When the storm passes, and the winds die down
and the sun shines again, the garden becomes a place
of peace and serenity.
The earth turns, the northern hemisphere warms up
and by June, my garden has emerged from its ice age
and presents a totally different picture. The perennials
that slept beneath the snow have awakened and
emerged from the earth and grown into tall plants.
My waist-high peonies bend under the weight of
ruffly pink, white and red flowers. Their perfume announces
their presence. The Siberian irises hold their
delicate blue flowers atop tall stately stems. Bearded
iris, not to be outdone by the Siberians, unfold their
much bigger blooms in shades of blues and purples.
The sedum and the phlox are growing,
but it will take until later in the season
for them to reach full height and
to flower.
The deciduous trees and shrubs have
sprouted green leaves and some are laden
with flowers. In June, my lilac trees hang heavy with
light purple, dark purple and white flowers.
They fill the air with their sweet scent. Honeysuckles
add their white and pink flowers to the colour pallet
and blend their aroma with the lilacs.
In June, birds have returned from their winter in the
south. They join with the blue jays and cardinals in
my garden where they sing and tweet and chirp as
they build nests and prepare to raise families.
The mood of my garden in June is not one of peace
and serenity but a whirling sense-stimulating experience
of colour, scents and sound. Sometimes when I
look at my garden in January and then in June, the
differences are so pronounced that it is difficult to
believe that it is the same garden. The benefit of gardening
in Ontario is that, with all the seasonal changes
that one has to contend with, one never has to contend
with boredom.
