Peace boat visits port
You’ve studied in
Copenhagen?
I worked in a butcher shop in
Norway from age 19-21ish then
came to study at Lincoln University
and Copenhagen University
for four years before staying on in
Christchurch.
What were you doing in
Norway?
Just travelling around snowboarding
and met a girl and
ended up staying there for about
two-and-a-half years. That was
a pretty cool experience. Working
at the butcher’s shop was
amazing; it was in a place called
Stavanger which is where the
fjords are and in the fjords they
didn’t have access to fresh meat
so there were a lot of traditional
Norwegian recipes that involved
salting and preserving meat. It
was quite interesting being the
only foreigner who’d worked in
this butcher shop for 175 years
and learning some of these traditional
Norwegian salting recipes.
And what do you get up to in
your spare time?
I like fishing, I go spear fishing
up in Kaikoura quite a lot; some
hunting, diving and surfing that’s
pretty much it. I love to get my
hands dirty.
If there was one thing you
would change about Sumner
what would it be?
That’s a tough one. Perhaps in
an ideal world Bohemian Bakery
would be open on Mondays and
Tuesdays – their food is amazing!
LYTTELTON received an
unexpected visit from a
Japanese peace boat on Sunday.
The ship had been in
Fiordland when it was
discovered it hadn’t been
quarantined.
It made the journey north
and docked at around 11am on
Sunday morning, remaining
until midnight while quarantine
was processed.
It has since returned to Fiordland.
Peace Boat is an international
organisation headquartered in
Japan which promotes peace,
human rights, environmental
awareness and sustainable
development.
The peace boats have been
compared to floating universities
or youth hostels.
Since 1983 there have been
about three journeys a year, offering
educational opportunities
to around 1000 passengers on
board.
They also provide
humanitarian aid at their
various stops and visit local
organisations.
The boat is visiting New Zealand
after a two-week speaking
tour of Australia.
