President’s Message from Dorothe Fair
I think the January thaw came for a short visit but didn't
stay long. We will remember this winter as the one that
broke many of the cold temperature records. It's been a
true Canadian winter but, like our Canadian culture, we
look for the positives and we embrace the highlights and
joys that come our way and the brilliant sunshine during this winter
was one of those joys. It has been spectacular as long as we were
behind glass!!
Now we have February - the month that warms our hearts and softens
our world with traditional love songs, boxes of delicious chocolates
and funny Valentine cards. Send one anonymously - it will
make you smile and be a 'treasure' for the receiver.
We know that these soothe our souls during the long bleak days of
winter. When we feel good after enjoying some 'chocolate delight',
it's easier to believe Spring is just around the corner.
A big "Welcome Back and Shout Out" to Tracy Benson who is returning
to the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre as of Jan 9.
Tracy has been working at the West End Centre and we are thrilled
to have her back supporting the GWSA Seniors.
Board Highlights:
1. ALERT: this is for all GWSA Members and Volunteers.
Please write in your calendars that the Evergreen Seniors
Community Centre will be CLOSED to everyone from JULY 2 to
AUGUST 7.
The City will be repaving the parking lot and replacing the sidewalks,
so plan your staycation or your getaway vacation for this
block of time because the building is closed and Elvis has left.
Activity Group Leaders will receive a new revised contract from
Tracy Benson formalizing the closure of the Centre.
2. In the January Sentinel, we had an article regarding the information
session the GWSA sponsored to hear Heather Flaherty, City
of Guelph General Manager Parks and Recreation, outline the City's
plan for the proposed South End Recreation Centre. Our next step
was to form a GWSA SERC committee to draft a wish list for the
needs and wants for Seniors at the new SERC.
This committee met on Jan. 2 and drafted the list. It covered transportation,
parking, gym time, access to the pools, fitness, ice pads
and a multi-purpose room. We covered safety issues, change rooms,
Boardroom and storage.
The report was presented to the GWSA Exec and Board of Directors
for approval and met Heather's due date for submission to the
City beginning the week of January 22.
Even though the report has been sent, we were told because of the
THE EDITOR’S PAGE by Linda Green
2018 is the Year of the Dog according to the Chinese
zodiac. This is a Year of Earth Dog, starting from
Feb. 16, 2018 (Chinese New Year) and lasting to
Feb. 4, 2019.
Dog is the eleventh in the 12-year cycle of Chinese
zodiac signs. The Years of the Dog include 1922,
1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018 and
2030.
Dog is man's good friend who can understand the
human's spirit and obey its master, whether he is
wealthy or not. The Chinese regard it as an auspicious
animal. If a dog happens to come to a house, it
symbolizes the coming of fortune. The invincible
God Erlang, in Chinese legend, used a loyal wolfhound
to help him capture monsters.
People born in the Year of the Dog are usually independent,
sincere, loyal and decisive according to
Chinese zodiac analysis. They are not afraid of difficulties
in daily life. These shining characteristics
make them have harmonious relationships with people
around them.
The GWSA website is sporting an updated look
Program Manager, Senior Services from Wendy Kornelsen
7
Welcome back to Tracy Benson! Tracy has returned to
work at Evergreen Seniors Community Centre. Many of
you will still have an opportunity to work with Kerry at
the West End Community Centre. Please drop in and say
hi to both Kerry and Tracy at their respective Centres.
As winter takes a firm grip on us, it is great to see so
many people staying connected through seniors programming.
To help maintain the building, where possible,
please bring a change of shoes to wear indoors while participating
in programs. Although your outdoor shoes may
look clean, they do carry lots of grit, which in turn damages
the hardwood floors and the carpet. This is really
important to help keep the floors clean and in good condition.
We want to ensure you the best conditions possible
and appreciate your help.
In just a short 6 weeks, we hope to have spring weather!
Registration for spring/summer recreation programs begins
March 1. Recreation Services and the GWSA believe
that everyone should have an opportunity to participate in
recreation programs and activity groups. The City of
Guelph has a fee assistance program in place to ensure
that cost is not a barrier to participating. GWSA works
with the City to support this program.
FAIR (fee assistance is recreation) is available for
GWSA memberships and City of Guelph Recreation Programs.
Based on financial criteria, you will receive a percentage
off your registration fee. This is a confidential
program. You can pick up an application form at the Centre
or call 519-822-1260 x2645 to speak directly with
staff. If you have any questions, please speak to the Recreation
Co-ordinator and she will be able to help you access
this service.
On November 9, Liz Sandals was at the Centre to announce
the new action plan for seniors: Aging with Confidence.
As per the provincial press release, the number of
seniors in Ontario is forecast to double to 4.6 million
within the next 25 years - and Ontario aims to become the
best place in the world to grow older. Aging with Confidence
focuses on areas that seniors say they care about
most, including living independently for as long as possible
and staying connected through social, recreational and
volunteer activities. To ensure Ontario is ready for the
changing realities of an aging population, the plan also
substantially expands the number of long-term care (LTC)
beds across the province, while increasing staffing levels
and support for LTC home residents.
The new action plan offers: A one-stop website where
seniors - about 70 per cent of whom go online every day -
can find information about tax credits, drug coverage,
powers of attorney, recreation programs and more. Seniors
will also be able to get information over the phone in
more than 150 languages
An annual high-dose influenza vaccine, targeted to
protect seniors, which will be available free of charge
as part of the Ontario Universal Influenza Immunization
Program, starting in the 2018-19 flu season.
Support for "naturally occurring" retirement
communities by investing more than $15 million over
two years for apartment buildings or housing developments
where many seniors already live close to one another.
More volunteering opportunities connecting seniors
and youth, fostering learning and mentorship
while reducing older people's risk of social isolation.
5,000 new LTC beds over the next four years and
15 million more hours of nursing, personal support
and therapeutic care annually for residents in LTC
homes, as well as a10-year plan to create more than
30,000 new beds over the next decade, working with the
long-term care sector.
The City of Guelph is supported by the Province as a
Senior Active Living Centre. As part of this support, we
had an opportunity to apply for a special one-time grant
to be used at the WECC and at Evergreen. We were successful
in our application! Grant dollars were used to purchase:
lobby furniture, travel group signage, fitness equipment
for GWSA Move Well program, printing of volunteer
recruitment pamphlets, laptop and projector for volunteer
training and orientation, emergency first aid training
for volunteers, training front line staff, promotional
material, laptop for GWSA, wireless microphone, and
special event highlighting City programs and services for
seniors. We are very thankful for this funding to help support
delivery of programs and services to seniors.
Upcoming Facility Work:
We are planning work on the parking lot at Evergreen:
removing the current sidewalk pavers and replacing with
a concrete sidewalk; replacing the parking lot lights with
new poles and LED fixtures; replacing the lighting on the
building, repaving the parking lot, and then fresh paint
outlining the parking spots, and painting directional arrows.
The work will happen from July 2-August 6. The Centre
will be closed to the public (including all GWSA members
and volunteers) and will re-open on August 7. We
are working to, where possible, move Recreation registered
courses to other facilities. We look forward to serving
you again at the Centre on August 7.
As with all construction, dates are fluid and changes do
happen. I will endeavour to keep you up-to-date through
the Sentinel and on the City website at www.guelph.ca/
seniors as more information becomes available.
Administraon Office — 519‐837‐5696
February is Heart Month. Life.
We don’t want you to miss it.
If you are interested in participating in or volunteering
at any of these events, please contact Nicole
Kerr, Interim Area Manager, at 519-837-4858
or email nicole.kerr@heartandstroke.ca.
The Heart & Stroke Foundation have invested
more than $1.45 billion in vital heart and stroke
research, making us the largest contributor in Canada
after the federal government. This investment
has contributed to the Canadian cardiovascular and
cerebrovascular community’s position as a leader
in the international research arena.
Over the past 60 years, with the Foundation’s
help, the death rate from heart disease and stroke
has declined by more than 75 per cent, with nearly
40 per cent of this decrease occurring in the past
decade.
Today, more than 90 per cent of Canadians who
have a heart attack and more than 80 per cent who
have a stroke, and make it to hospital, will survive.
Heart disease and stroke are the leading cause of
hospitalization and the second and third leading
causes of death in Canada.
More than 66,000 Canadians died in 2012 from
heart disease or stroke. That’s one person every 7
minutes. Up to 70,000 heart attacks, 62,000 strokes
and 40,000 cardiac arrests occur each year in Canada.
Last year, the Foundation helped create 165,000
more survivors. With your support we can do even
better.
There are all sorts of ways to get involved for
this February’s Heart Month campaign and
throughout the year:
For more information about the Heart & Stroke
Foundation, please visit www.heartandstroke.ca or
make sure you drop by the CSS whiteboard display.
Every donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation
supports investment in life-saving research,
advocacy, health promotions and education programs.
It’s all aimed at reducing the impact of
heart disease and stroke, and helping Canadians
live longer, fuller lives. Please give generously
when Heart and Stroke Foundation Volunteers
come calling this February. You can also support
online at heartandstroke.ca/HELP or by calling 1
888 HSF INFO (1-888-473- 4636).
CSS Spring Education Series:
Planning for the popular CSS education series is
underway and we will be announcing our line-up
in mid-February. Watch for flyers, mail-outs and
check the GWSA website for details. Sessions will
be hosted at the Evergreen Centre between April 9
and May 29.
Free Food Demonstration:
Always interesting and always delicious —
come learn about nutritious food ideas and enjoy
some free samples of seasonal food. Provided
with the support of Dietitians with the
Guelph Family Health Team, this event will be
GWSA’s CENTENARIAN CLUB
by Ross Coulter
It is rare that a seniors association such as the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association can recognize and
celebrate members who have reached the enviable age of 100. On December 11, the GWSA mounted a
plaque on the lobby wall that reads “The Hundred Year Old Club”. Under the plaque, the names and
pictures of those individuals who achieved 100 years or older while members of the association were
mounted. The first two members to be so recognized are Charlie Corcoran, at 103 years of age, who still
makes the occasional appearance at the Evergreen Centre, and Veronica Turner who achieved the magic
age while a still active member, but who unfortunately passed away last fall. Appropriate tribute was paid
to both as members of their respective families joined GWSA members in the celebration, which included
a few choral selections by members of the Silvertones.
Mayor Guthrie, accompanied by four city councillors, attended the event and lauded the accomplishments
of the GWSA in the support and recognition of Guelph’s growing senior community. It was noted
that there are a number of currently active GWSA members in their early to mid-nineties who may very
well become members of this club in the next few years. As a GWSA member himself, the Mayor expressed
his desire to one day find his picture on the wall alongside Charlie and Veronica.
At the end of the official recognition ceremony, all in attendance were invited to share in refreshments of
coffee and specially decorated cake. Many volunteers put the event together and received their due recognition.
Art in the Hall
The Art in the Hall project is mandated
to display good art work in the
halls of the Evergreen Centre. The
art for February is produced by Anne
Johnson until February 10 and then
for the rest of the month by the “Art
Studio in 2 Club.” If you are interested
in having your work in a solo exhibition,
or if you are interested in
having a few pieces of your work as
part of a group display at the Evergreen
Centre in 2018, contact Ted
Pritchard at 519 826-6121 or
tpritcha@rogers.com by the end of
February, 2018.
If you are interested in sitting on the
Art in the Hall Committee for selecting
art for display at the Evergreen
Centre, and assisting with the hanging
of the art, also contact Ted.
Art Studio in 2
Art Studio in 2 is an art group working
out of Room 2 at the Evergreen
Centre on alternate Tuesday evenings
and on alternate Wednesday afternoons
from 12:00 pm until 4:00 pm
starting the second week of the
month. The artists in this club
choose their own media to work
with, examples of which are acrylic
painting, Bunka, drawing, pastels,
porcelain painting, printmaking,
stitchery/textile arts, watercolour
painting and others. Artists will need
to provide all the materials they need
to complete their work and be prepared
to share their technique and
insights with other artists. The membership
in Art Studio in 2 is limited
to 24 and yearly membership costs
$27.00 including HST, in addition to
the GWSA membership. If you are
interested in joining Art Studio in 2
for 2018, contact Ted Pritchard at
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by using
a unique combination of punch
needle and special silk-like rayon
thread (yarn). When completed,
many pictures resemble delicately
shaded paintings. In fact, the needle
is held and operates in much the
same manner as an artist’s brush or
pencil. The Bunka artist uses many
different stitch techniques in order to
achieve the desired effect of depth
and interest, but unlike other forms
of needle art, there are no knots to tie
and mistakes are easily corrected.
This group is for all skill levels and
meets every Wednesday from 9:15
a.m. to noon.
Canasta - NEW
Come join us for a game of Canasta.
Everyone Welcome
Into Focus Photography Club
The January theme for our club photographs
was tattoos. The pictures
will be hanging in the Evergreen
restaurant throughout February. In
the old days, events like the Edinburgh
Tattoo commonly demonstrated
military skills and precision
marching bands. Now they are usually
thought of as body art and are
often associated with body piercings.
Tattoo parlours are almost as numerous
as Tim Hortons drive-thrus.
Keep an eye on the restaurant walls
to see how our members interpreted
the theme.
Our theme for February is
“monochrome.” This could be either
black and white, sepia, or any other
colour. The defining feature of a
monochrome photo is to have different
shades of only one colour. When
you are in the restaurant next month,
look for the ways our members approached
this challenge.
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment ranging
from mobile phones and point
and shoot cameras to fancy DSLR
models. We share a common interest
in photography as a hobby and we
learn from each other. At last count
we have 43 members. New members
are always welcome.
If you are interested in joining,
contact Jean McClelland by e-mail:
jeanmcclelland@rogers.com.
Pickleball
Success of a GWSA Evergreen activity
is no more evident than the
Pickleball Club. Coming up on the
anniversary of just four years, the
membership has grown to 157 members.
That’s about 40 new members
every year. Since its inception four
years ago, there have been 203 people
sign up and pay for a membership
into the club. Unfortunately,
there had to be a cap placed on our
membership due to a consistent attendance
of between 35-40 players
each day.
We are proud to say we are helping
in the growth of the membership
to the GWSA with more than half of
the new members joining the GWSA
for the first time.
In the new year, there was a clinic
in January and an in-house tournament
will take place in the spring. A
Silvertones
The Silvertones Choir was formed
over 37 years ago and now boasts
over 50 members. The mixed group
of seniors share the love of singing -
songs old and new. They also love to
entertain with their singing and to
spread cheer.
The choir reconvened after its
Christmas break on Friday, January
5 and began working on a new repertoire
of music for their winter/spring
sing-outs in local seniors’ and retirement
homes and residences.
Songs include Waltzing Matilda,
Ach Du Lieber Augustin, Mary
Anne, Allouette, Cockles and Mussels,
All Through the Night, Loch
Lomond, Greensleeves, La Cucaracha,
Hava Nagila, Shanandoah,
Something to Sing About, Rain and
Go With a Song in Your Heart.
Here is the full list of Sing-Outs
Skiing
It costs $10.00 plus HST to join the
Everwhite Ski Club. You register
and pay for Downhill Skiing at the
front desk of the Evergreen Centre.
It helps to own a 5-7 Pass purchased
from Blue Mountain. We ski every
Monday at Blue Mountain while
there is snow. We carpool by meeting
at the lower Evergreen Parking
Lot by the Enabling Garden at 8:00
am and return to Guelph by 6:00
pm. Think snow.
Contact Cathy Densmore (519) 822-
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is
composed of a group of active,
friendly players with skill levels
covering the full spectrum from
learner/beginner to accomplished
player. If you are interested in
learning the game, or have played in
the past and want to get back into it,
please drop by the snooker room.
You will be assured a warm welcome
and a place to try your hand at
one of our three tables. The snooker
room is open weekdays between
9:00 am and 4:00 pm and any other
time the Evergreen Centre may be
open.
The primary focus of the club is
to have fun, build friendships and
socialize. Your snooker skill level is
irrelevant so don’t feel intimidated if
you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the club room up
to three times without charge to help
with their decision on whether to
join. While most of the current
members are men, there is a small
group of women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings), so
ladies, don’t be shy to give it a try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current fee
of $70 (plus tax) buys you access to
the snooker room anytime it is open
and all the snooker you care to play.
Texas Hold’Em
Why not come out and have fun
with us? We are averaging about 16
players a week and are situated in
the Dining Room.
We charge $1.50 per week and
pretty well all of that goes back to
the GWSA. We play from 6:30 to
8:30 pm.
Each player starts off with $500
in real casino chips and, as we do
not play for money, we work on a
point system; the one with the most
points each week is the winner. We
play until there is only one player
left or 8:30 pm comes, whichever
comes first.
We will gladly teach anyone who
is interested in playing. Just follow
the laughter to find us.
We have about six ladies playing
at present and would always welcome
more. We do not want to become
a men’s club! Remember, you
have to be a member of GWSA to
play.
Walking Club
Our walking season is over and
won’t recommence until April.
However, we will still be keeping in
touch with one another and our winter
socials will be held on Thursdays,
February 8 in Room 3 and
March 8 in Room 2 at the Evergreen
Centre from 1:30 to 4:00 pm. On
February 8, Ralph Van Haeren will
be giving us another presentation on
his travels and we are looking forward
to it. Hope this will make the
winter seem a bit shorter! We look
forward to seeing you all there.
Watercolour Painters Club
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters
Club provides an opportunity for
watercolour painters to practice their
hobby along with others sharing the
same interest, while encouraging
one another and receiving information,
ideas and inspiration. While
we do not offer classes or lessons,
we welcome accomplished watercolour
painters. There is a small annual
membership fee and membership
with the GWSA is required. We
meet on the 1st and 5th Wednesday
from 12:30 to 4:00 pm and 3rd
Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. - 4:00
pm in Room 2.
ATTENTION
Activity Leaders and Event Planners
Please be reminded that the Membership and Marketing
Committee will be pleased to place advertisements in selected
A Thoroughly Confused Cat!
by Ross Coulter
Let me introduce myself. I am a feline of Tabby note
with the typical tan and black striping. I sport a white
under-belly and have white paws. My markings are
somewhat remarkable in that they are predominately
symmetrical with few exceptions.
I am totally blank on my origins and how I arrived
with my twin brother at the local animal shelter; after
all, I was only 4 months old at the time. I don’t know
how long we were there, caged as we were, until a
human couple came by to look us over. I don’t know
the source of the driving force; perhaps it was his
aura, but I was immediately drawn to the man. My
senses proved positive as he picked me up. I immediately
felt warmth, strength and gentleness in his
hands as he stroked my head and tummy while cuddling
me. Of course I started purring, what kitten
wouldn’t? Meanwhile the lady was paying attention
to my brother of similar markings, who scurried back
into the cage, and a two-year-old, black and white,
huge fellow inmate. Seems to me she was smitten
with his sweet, gentle temperament because she had
a big smile on her face when she hefted him up. He
snuggled into her arms and started purring like me.
A volunteer at the shelter had christened me
“Squiggy” but the man never used it as he murmured
in my ear. He called me “Wee Boy” or “Cutie”,
much nicer sounding names. On that fortunate day, I
was adopted along with the lady’s choice of the twoyear-old
black and white and commenced a life of
which every other orphan cat would be envious.
On arrival at our new home, we were given free
rein to explore and settle in. My instinct suggested
that as a male cat I should stake out my territory and
my now fellow feline house mate, also male, probably
thinking his superior age and size should designate
him as the alpha, would do the same. But the
fact that we had both been “fixed”, having had our
“Tomness” removed, any competition between us
was at a very low level except as it related to gaining
the attention of our humans.
Shortly after arriving in our new home, the man
and lady started to play the name game. They debated
about what they should name us. I had thought the
man had already renamed me back at the shelter,
“Wee Boy” or “Cutie” or both, but as it turned out
they started to call me Casey. I could live with that
until they named my roommate Clancy. There might
be room for confusion. Such was not the case as my
initial perception about my new master proved true.
(Geez, I hate that reference when instinctively I
know the opposite to be true.) He was warm, kind
and gentle and, OH! Those hands! As time progressed,
I would seek him out more and more to experience
his gentle petting. It set me
to drooling and I started showing my
affection by licking his hands. He
started calling me “Licker” and
“Drooler”.
I started following him around the
house, letting him know with my little yip (I
never meowed like a normal cat), that I wanted to be
picked up. He started calling me his little dog. Whenever
he goes out, I sit on the mat awaiting his return.
When he walks through the door, I weave between
his legs while he tries to take off his shoes. That’s
when he calls me “Pest”. Sometimes I just sit in front
of him while he reads, staring at him, thinking he
will guess what I want. He tries to stare me down but
I always win and he calls me “Brat”. On other occasions,
if I really natter with my yips to get his attention,
he will call me “Monkey”. If he really wants to
get my attention, he will call me Casey, but I am so
used to being called Wee Boy, Cutie, Monkey, little
dog, Pest, Brat, Licker, Drooler, or any other term of
endearment, I don’t respond. Dog probably would
have been a more appropriate name because I consistently
follow him around the house and I do lie at
his feet in the morning while he reads the newspaper.
While I am a bit confused as to my real name, anything
he calls me normally gets my attention. Sometimes
he tries to ignore me, but I can be very persistent
and bug him until he defers to my demands,
which he does most often by picking me up for a
cuddle and gentle stroking from his strong, warm and
gentle hands.
I’m surprised that he hasn’t started calling me his
“Little B----r”! Now that would be offensive and I
would probably ignore him altogether, but he is the
hand that feeds and I do rely on him for sustenance.
No! I think, as in the 12 or so years we have been
together, I have gained mastery over him, I will continue
allowing him to call me by whatever name he
wishes.
A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK
Chris Fraser
The Book Nook —
“A Lending Library”
We are open Monday to
Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
* * * *
If you are looking for a good book
to read while sitting around the fire
keeping warm, I am pleased to tell
you about the latest book “End
Game” by David Baldacci.
This is another page-turning story
about Will Robie and Jessica
Reel who are two of the most lethal
operatives the government
calls upon to take out those who
plot violence and mass destruction
against the United States.
Their handler, who goes by the
name of Blue Man, has mysteriously
disappeared in rural Colorado
so Will and Jessica have been
selected to go there and try to find
him.
They go to a small town named
Grand, and discover this town has
a lot of problems with an understaffed
police force and a few militant
groups.
They run into these groups while
investigating the disappearance of
Blue Man, and find themselves up
against some superior firepower.
Some of the folks they talk to also
suddenly disappear, so Will and
Jessica assume they are being taken
somewhere and possibly this is
also where Blue Man might be
held hostage.
As always, there are many twists
and turns in this story and a book
you won’t want to put down.
I hope you enjoy reading this as
much as I did.
Happy reading!
short turn around time, if we have additional requests
we would like the City to consider, we can forward
them to Heather. The City will be involved in full
Community Engagement with the South End residents
and the various Community Groups.
To be very clear: the City is designing a 'multipurpose'
Centre that will be shared by many Community
Groups. The GWSA is one of the Groups.
The only 'dedicated' building for Seniors will remain
the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre.
The intent is not to clone the Activity Groups offered
at the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre,
rather it is to offer a reduced selection of activities
that the space and the community interest dictates
and the City can accommodate.
If you have any questions or suggestions regarding
the SERC, please contact any member of the GWSA
SERC Committee:
Jennifer Blackie, Wendi Hake, Ken Chupa, Nick
Harris or me, Dorothe Fair. Additional Directors to
the SERC Committee are Kerry Detlor and
Nick Pellizzari, Co-Chairs of the GWSA Program
Committee.
for this role.
5. We are still asking you to complete the e-mail
distribution form so we may communicate with you.
These forms are at the front counter. Just ask one of
the volunteers.
6. Remember these very special February Dates:
Tues. February 13 - Shrove Tuesday
Wed. February 14 - Valentine's Day
Thurs. February 15 - National Flag Day
Fri. February 16 - Chinese New Year
In closing, I truly LOVE February; that's truly
from my heart. Take care of your heart this month
with an extra effort to get outside for a little walk or
come here to the Centre and do something different,
like line dancing, pickle ball, snooker, crafts, board
games, or stop by on a Monday morning and let's
have an old fashioned heart-to-heart chat about
the GWSA.
Remember, "love does not keep a ledger of the
mistakes and failures of others".
See you next month, Dorothe Fair
3. January was a very busy month for the Board.
The final stages of the fiscal budget was prepared by
our newly elected Treasurer, Nick Harris. The Board
is very pleased to have Nick assume this role effective
as of Jan. 2, 2018. Wendi Hake has done an
excellent job carrying both portfolios as Financial
Administrator and Treasurer since our last AGM and
now she will assist Nick with his transition into both
roles of Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee.
4. The Variety Show had its wrap-up meeting on
January 12 and, overall, there was tremendous respect
and appreciation given to the time commitment
of the core group: Director (John Snowdon), Producer
and Media (Barry Scutt), Stage Manager
(Russ Milliner) and Choir Director (Ann Sneyd).
Many, many people assist in various roles and their
happy nature is a blessing.
The VS Committee meets for 9 months and there
are others who join in at the time of performance and
help out during the Show.
All the various support areas that culminate and
the people involved are listed in the VS Program. I'm
giving a brief synopsis in this President’s Message,
because I'm looking to step away from Chairing this
wonderful Committee. I've been the Chair for two
years and now I'm asking one of YOU to take over
as Chair. Contact me and I promise to mentor you
